So tired with one functioning kidney?

Posted , 8 users are following.

Just had tests and found out only one of my kidneys is functioning, I also have blood in my urine. Just wanting to ask if I should be feeling so tired and drained. As far as I know the other kidney is ok dont know for sure until I see the urologist but the doctor who done my cytoscopy (which she said was fine)  looked at results from scan and told me the left atrophic kidney is not functioning at all the right one is fine. So why am I feeling so tired. Has anyone else had a similar experience and also she said I could have been born with it?? With what? A small kidney or a none functioning kidney? Loads of questions going round in my head but mostly sick and fed up of feeling so drained.

hi, l havent experience like yours, but sure someone who has will pick up with advice, Sorry about your news, l know that many people seem to live an active life with one kidney, but maybe the process of one failing causes the fatigue, or it could be something different, if you get blood in your urine regularly that wont help, did they check for aneamia l guess theyve done samples to check for infection of bladder, or should do, but the doc needs to let you know why youve blood there. l,ve long standing intersticial cystitus, on odd occassions its affected kidney, pyleitus, at my last cystascope a few month back l was told one of my kidneys was small, and l,d a small cyst on one of kidney,s, but not considered a serious problem, still your bound to wonder and worry a bit, its natural to. l think some docs dont talk and explain enough, some just give you bad news and leave you to it, no info, advice, not even a leaflet with info on.  But l know the feeling of tiredness, fatigue, often falling asleep, its frustrating and a downer,  but think many other reasons for it also. l,m still trying to find out what my problem is thats causing it,  Anyway, l expect someone with kidney probs simular to yours will come and give you info,   best wishes

Thank you went back to see urologist Christmas Eve. I know he must see many patients but he didn't even know what previous tests he'd sent me for or the results he was about to send me for the same scan. I told him the letter he had sent to my doctor said that my kidney wasn't working at all and he had to look at results again! Total waste of time but he has referred me to a kidney specialist who hopefully may take more interest.

Hi Julie, I'm 25 and have one kidney, my other one was taken out after damage from renal reflux happened, I have like chronic fatigue. My consultant thinks nothing of it, seems to be a normal side effect of reduced kidney functioning, my hb is usually 9or 10 should be 11 so I'm anaemic too which is all apart of it, so I think it's just adjusting to the fatigue

My husband has this and the blood in the write was a bladder infection.  That’s when they found that he only one kidney.  I thought he was always tired because he hunts and works all the time.  He’s been on meds for six months Flomax, Proscar, and Phenazopyridine.  Nothing has changed and now he is sleeping more.  He is having a UR LIFT in December.

I have been tired as long as I can remember.  In my early 30s, it was discovered that 1 of my kidneys was very small.  Doctors only cared that the larger one was functioning normally.  After becoming completely depleted and unable to function normally at all, I was seen by a specialist who removed the malformed kidney.  It was septic and had been festering for many years.  I had some improvement as a result of the surgery, however now tha5 I only have 1 kidney, my normal is still living with fatigue...
