So worried, not sure if its UC? Help!!

Hi, Im wondering if there is anyone that could offer me some advise. I had my galbladder taken out in 2005 then in '06 I had my appendix out but since Ive never felt well. My doc kept telling me it was IBS but just before xmas I lost alot of weight (stone & a half) & my symtoms because worse. So Ive had a colonscopy 2 weeks ago where they found an ulcer on the bowel wall. They gave me a prescription to start predfoam. The first week was great, I taught I was on the mend. But now my pain is back in the right hand side & so severe. Im due to have a barium x-ray this week. When I have the pain in the right hand side, it also makes very loud noises, this may sound weird but its as if theres a leak there. A month ago I was sent to A&E & they said I had a urinary tract infection & that it was probally due to what ever is going on with my bowel. Im so confused at this stage. Im 29, have 2 children but the poor pets must feel as if they've no mam these last few months. Im off work with the last 6 weeks as it just got too much. If any one could maybe suggest what they think is going on, I would be very greatfull.[b:087f244a10][/b:087f244a10]

It depends what the ulceration looks like, Im wondering if you have crohns disease rather than uc :?

Hi, thank u so much for your reply. Im starting to think its crohns as well. Do you think they will know this after the barium x-ray??? And also Im worried in case the predfoam might mask what ever is the problem on the right side, can this happen do you know??[b:ac605cac3b][/b:ac605cac3b]

I think theyre already suspecting you have crohns, the barium x-ray is to check the state of your intestines as you might have further ulceration or some strictures (tight spots) in there, this new right side problem may be another ulcer (crohns skip lesions) :? If anything the predfoam should help it all get better, you feeling it get worse isnt brilliant but that said you are suffering from a flare up of something at the moment smile

Dr Spock, thank u very much. It puts my mind at ease when someone else is thinking my taughts. I suppose its just a waiting game now & hopefully with the correct treatment I might be able to get my life back on track.

You are young and you dont mention being in a really bad way so yes you should be alot better in a few months, it depends how much more it kicks off, if it stays roughly at this level then its not too bad smile

Its quite common for the colon to become tighter around areas of ulceration so this might help explain any build up of air / gas and the glug glug glug sounds. Talk to your GP if this pain in your side is bad enough to be worrying you smile

Best wishes, tell us what they say smile

Oh I hope your right. To be honest with u, it feels bad enough & my emotions at the moment are all over the shop. I rang my doc this morning to know if he could give me anything for the pain as I havent slept with 2 nights. Im very bitter towards him, as I feel he did'nt listen to me when I told him I felt it was too severe to be ibs. He kept telling me it was & that it was caused by stress. STRESS im so sick of hearing everything been blamed on that. It will be 2 weeks before I meet the consultant & at the moment that feels as if its 2 years away. Thanks so much for your comments, Im so glad I came across this site. I know im very lucky to have good family & friends but at times u get sick of hearing think positive. Im trying but its hard.

How is your pain, does it feel like trapped wind yet you dont fart or burp enough to reflect how bad it feels? smile

Hello Dr Spock, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. But on the 7th March I was sent to A&E with really bad pain & kept for 2 weeks. Had test after test done & they have diagnosed crohn's disease as we were both thinking!! They have started me on steriods & I was feeling great but this week the pain is starting to come back & I've had to start back on the painkillers. Suppose I might as well get used to it because its probally going to pop up alot!! Although someone told me to give it a bit more time for the steriods to start working (hope their right).

Hi there I wondered what happened to you, thanks for the update smile

It might get a little worse before it gets better, yes unfortunately healing takes months rather than weeks sad If you are suffering with more pain and or cramping you should ask your doctor for something more, perhaps something for the cramping as I know painkillers dont stop that completely, I think its the least they can do :?

Hello Dr Spock, hope u log in soon cause i really need your advise. Im back in hospital since sat. Had a very high temp, bad fever & pain. When i came back in they done another ct scan & said there has been no improvement since the one they done 4 wks back. Since sat they have me on high dose steriods through the arm, i have gained 5kg since sat is that normal??? Im so blown up. They are now considering surgery, as they feel the medicine is'nt helping.

Can you offer me any advise?? Is the operation a good route??

Ive had keyhole surgery twice already so they have said they cant do keyhole again.

Why did'nt i get better with the steriods? So up in the air at the moment, sorry if im going on, just down, as doc's leave you waiting all day after promising that they would come & talk to you!!!

    Thanks, Jacinta

Oh dear, sorry to hear about your setback sad

Gosh having your whole colon out after only 4 weeks treatment of a few troublesome lesions seems a little harsh  There are other medicines for example immunosuppressants, surely theyre worth a try before you go for the chop :?

It's not all of the colon they would be taking, its just a bit of the small intestine (terminal ileum) where the bad part is!!!! Thanks for getting back to me....
  • Posted

Ah right, the terminal ileum is a classic place to get ulceration. The problem is when they take that section out the crohns may just flare up again at the op / join site :?

Sorry yes, the steroids will make you gain weight and give you a moon face smile
