Soft Tissue healing after THR

Hi All,

This forum has, more than anything else, provided me with clarity and resolve for the operation I am booked in for in August. Thanks.

There is really only one thing playing on my mind now. That is I am wondering how well one can expect the soft tissue to repair post op.

I understand that during my operation several muscles will be split including the gluteus maximus and fascia lata. These muscles will be stitched up afterwards. Generally speaking can you expect these muscles to heal back to normal or will there be internal scaring or some permanent injury to the muscles post op?

Actually there are two things playing on my mind. The second is that I am a little scared of the general anaesthetic.

Thank you all for your responses. This is again better than any information I could find elsewhere.

An epidural / spinal tap will last about 4-5 hours. I was in bed, in my hospital room, wide awake before the freezing dissipated. Most straightforward surgeries last 1-1.5 hours. I would definitely choose this again if had a choice as the recovery of your senses seems much easier with no nausea.

Try to get as strong as you can before the surgery. I did this and it really aided my post-op recovery. I am two months today and walking normally.

My muscles weren't cut. They were just stretched. As a result I recovered very quickly. Ask your surgeon if he/she can do this.

Oh, and I had a GA. Absolutely no problem. I was on my feet and taking first steps 4 hours after the op.

HI John. I take it that you will have a posterior approach? That's what I had 10 weeks ago. It is just about now that I feel strong enough to walk on my own. I did the exercises prescribed constantly in order to strengthen those muscles. As if overnight, my strength and ability just returned! Be sure to do the exercises and do exactly as your Dr. says. All will be well. It does take longer for the posterior approach to heal. I am living proof that it does indeed happen. Best of luck. Cindy

Thanks Cindy. Yes having posterior approach. It must feel great to have your strength return. Very encouraging to hear your story. I plan on being very diligent with my exercises.
