Some Questions.....

So I am just starting WBAT on an air cast

1) My foot has a shiny parlour and is red and blue and purplish.... swollen as well. How long did it take you to get a more normal colour back? .

2) My skin is peeling and I am wondering if there is a particular cream people use.

3) My foot doesn't hurt and I am assuming that as long  as it doesn't hurt I am not damaging it.... or is this a false Assumption?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

    Hi Zelda,

I am post injury into my 11th week now and I am still finding that my foot goes a purplish red colour when it is not elevated.  It seems to me that it is not quite as purple as it was initially, but maybe that's just wishful thinking.

I have been using baby oil to rid my leg/foot of the dry skin, I have found that creams or lotions are not being absorbed at all and they just cake up.  Baby oil has worked excellently for me.

I am only 20lbs. weight bearing so far, but I too am not finding it painful to put pressure on it, which is nice but at the same time I am not pushing it either.  I don't want to take any steps backwards in my recovery, I've been thru enough.  Hope this helps.

    Good luck with your recovery!!

Glad the cast/boot are off. But please remember to ice and elevate as much ad possible. I'm 6mths dwn the line and my foot still swells but no where near ad bad ad it did at 11weeks. I didn't loose my boot till about 13/14 weeks I think. Hope your recovery carries on pain free, but don't kid yourself into thinking you won't get pain once you start to put full weight onto your foot. I've gone through tones where I've been able to leave pain meds off then other times pain had been bad enough where I've had to get back onto the medication. More aching then pain. Boot shopping today, but out of 8 pairs I could only get my foot into 2 because of swelling around the ankle. Then had to get a pair one size bigger then my normal size 5. 😔. Been told by physio that I will most probably always have a bigger ankle now. Good job I love my trousers and long dresses. All your nice colours will disappear in time I promise, but it does take time. Good luck with your healing recovery. Sx

Thanks Sandra - My ankle and foot is swollen for sure, but no more so than when the cast came off so didn't really think about icing and elevating. I will try and see if that makes a difference.

I am 7 weeks into this. My doctor also told me to WBAT. First few days I had no issues but then it started to swell and I have pain on my incision site. I also have peeling. I am sitting with ice and elevation as needed. I just use eucerin lotion on the foot, probably any basic lotion should work. I am taking it slow and giving myself another 5 weeks before I attempt to return to work. Good luck to you (and me) that we cant walk before too long.

Yes... good luck to us all. I am giving myself three weeks to start back to work.... 4 at Most!  I am going to try the baby oil for the dry skin. So far I am putting about 50% on my foot and it doesn't hurt so I am taking that as a good sign. Going on get an assessment from the physio this week and am excited to get Moving!,,,

I am going on 15 weeks post op and my leg and foot still get dark purple and swell when I walk around. I use vitamin E oil on my foot at night and put a sock on.

Thanks.... the sock must really help keep the skin moisturized will Try!

    Hi,

I used coconut oil for the dry skin and it worked awesome.

I googled it and found out that it has many other benefits as well.

    I now use it daily.

I am 11 weeks out since ankle fixation surgery and find the swelling and achy pain to still be a problem.i am a plumber, so I am on my feet and ladders alot.i find that 3 or 4 hours is all I can take. Hopefully this will increase. I wish you luck!
