Some reassurance until doctors appointment

hi all, hope someone can give some advice here as really stressed about this! i have dealt with a fissure before so i know what thats like so when i almost leap off the toilet feeling like i have just passed glass i am never surprised when i see a streak of blood on the toilet paper but this doesnt happen often. however i have been dealing with ibs since a bad stomach infection about 2 years ago and my digestion has changed since then mostly quite soft bowel movements which are easy to pass. they seem to be already sitting in my bottom in the mornings ready to go. the last few months i have been getting some more well formed stools and i notice that i have been seeing some bright red blood on the toilet paper with those. about 3 days ago i passed a larger one than normal but no real straining and noticed some bright red streaks up the sides and a small blob of blood on the end of it. the following couple of days since this i checked again and there was only 1 streak and not as bad. no blood in the toilet or mixed in with stool as i looked through it, in fact my stool is light tan so was easy to see. i am calling the doctor on monday to see what shes says but for any hemmorhoid sufferers does this sound like hemmohroids? i have no pain but later in the day feel as though there is a slight burning inside my bottom but again mild. finding it difficult to eat worrying about it as i suffer from anxiety quite bad over the last couple of years mainly due to my digestion. thanks in advance.

Hi,
Seeing blood for the first time is terrifying, in fact at any time. It could certainly be a hemorrhoid especially since you've had some burning, for me this feels like acid and can be quite intense. Do you have any pressure/fullness, odd sensations? I find symptoms develop over a few days after seeing blood so you may yet have others but that said for some it's just painless bleeding. You don't always need straining either, larger movements can contribute. Go get checked out but bare in mind that internal hemms cannot be felt even by the GP, they need an anoscope at the least.

hi and thanks for the reply! i have noticed blood on paper a few times over the last couple of months but no odd sensations that go with it but normally bowel movements are on the softer side. these last bowel movements have been more on the normal side for a change and i dont think my bum is used to it so i have felt like a dull stinging but not that severe. most of my poop is always on the softer side as i have been dealing with ibs for a couple of years and only on occasion do i get a normal one and it was these times i saw the bright red streaks on the sides. calling the doctor tomorrow as it was closed today due to easter. in a real state of fear at the moment.

No worries, I know it's easy for me to say but try not to worry, we've all been in the same situation. Looser stools can actually be as bad if not worse as harder stool as they cause irritation, my GP always states that you need to aim for somewhere inbetween and is the reason why the prescribe softener and not laxative. Try and have a quick look with a mirror, I was in your situation and was struggling with anxiety until one day I decided to take a look and found an external hemm which was then confirmed by the GP. Rectal bleeding is common but very few speak about it, however it should always be checked out. I have had varying amounts from a single drop to literally soaking the tissue.
Let us know how you get on.

I'm going through this right now. I have my doctor phoning me tomorrow. The blood is on the tissue and also on the sides but not inside as i also checked. Also stings a little, have been told it is highly likely yo be a hemarroid as i can also see a bit of swelling on the outside of that area. Seeing the blood completely freaked me out!

yes i know it is terrifying! i went to doctors today! mine stopped for a couple of days as i was having softer bowel movements but this morning had a firm one and saw a little blood again on the side again bright red. explained all to doc and she did a rectal exam. no masses or anything sinister but also said normally they couldnt feel internal hems. she gave me suppositories to see if that will heal things up. i am back in tomorrow for my smear so will also ask for blood test. hope you managed to get an appointment today?

Hi,
It's great you have been checked out. Absolutely right Internal hems cannot be felt and unless prolapsed and can only be confirmed by a visual check using a scope. If you're still concerned ask for a Calprotectin test, this measures inflammation in the bowel and although no specific to any condition can give a very good indication whether it's worth further investigation. A normal result usually needs no further investigation i.e a scope. In the meantime use the suppository and you could also use a softener.

ive been having these symtoms, blood on tissue and also blood on the sides. Have you looked at it at all after a bowel movement or anything? My doctor said mine sounds like haemmorrhoids but im going into the doctors tomorrow to have it looked at mainly to put my mind at ease. I suffer with health anxiety so have been driving myself mad!!!

how did you get on? yes i suffer from health anxiety too its horrible! my doctor did a rectal exam and found nothing sinister so she says its internal hemms although you cant feel them. she examined my stomach and that felt fine and also did a full blood test which showed no enemia in fact my levels were above normal and no inflamation markers. was given suppositories so hoping that helps. although with all the worry i have loose stools now which isnt good for them either apparently but also scared to have a larger bowel movement. my symptoms are the same as yours!
