Someone I know with CFS/ME

Hi folks, this is not for me but for someone else so apologies if not all my information is completely up to date. This person has not been able to work for the better part of a year and lives at home with a parent. They have been through lots of drugs and don't seem to get anywhere. They are now becoming more and more in pain, and until they just went to a Consultant were on Morphine. Now they are being told to get off the pain med and back onto a Neuropathic pain relief drug like Gabapentin, Pregabalin or Duloxetine. Trouble is all three of these have been tried and either had back side effects or made no difference at all.

Be glad to hear of anything that has helped people, advice etc, as I am sure it can be a lottery as to the specialist you see and whether they hit on what is really needed.

I find I am hyposensitive to most drugs but take 5mg of pregablin each night to help relax the pains in my legs.  I find a microwave pad is a great help as well. I visited a CFS specialist for six months.  Generally they just help you to accept the condition and try to organise your life into a routine - there is no magic cure unfortunately!  I have been discharged now because I find I can manage on a set weekly routine.  I still work 6 hours a day at a desk job.  I find light and noise very difficult to deal with but with the help of my employer to get me the right environment I find work manageable now.  I am a lot better than a lot of the people on this forum but I think positivity is very important.  Hope this helps a bit. It is has taken me a year to get to this point so dont expect immediate results.

With chronic pain long-term use of drugs like morphine can end up doing more harm than good. Unfortunately, there often isn't an easy solution for people. My preference would be to try to move off the morphine, even though it would probably make this worse in the short-run, but that is my personal preference, and I realise it will be a difficult one. Wish there was a better alternative for your friend.
