Something that seems to work for me.

This may sound really odd, but for some reason when I feel the itchy rash begin on my face that signals an outbreak, I cover the area thickly with cold cream. It seems to calm it down. I do the same on my left ear lobe, when it begins to swell. I had shingles very severely seven years ago that lasted several months on the left side of my head. It reoccurred a couple of times to a lesser extent. So now I avoid touching any of the areas and keep that cold cream handy. It is always a fear, but so far the cold cream does seem to have an effect.

That is a fantastic idea! You are covering the nerve endings that are screaming with pain. I use ear drops with Benzocaine for my recurrent Herpes Zoster! Shingles.
The other thing I do to lessen the severity of pain and frequency of episodes of Herpes Zoster Shingles is follow high Lysine low Arginine diet. Arginine triggers the Varicella Herpes virus. (Google Herpes and high Lysine low Arginine diet.)
Best Wishes
