Son having colonoscopy

Hello

My son is due for a colonoscopy end of December.  He is 22 and has has CD since age 14.  In 2012 had ileum resection due to stricture.

In September my son began having regular Crohns pain.

A few weeks ago after we left the consultant we both were surprised & confused as he said if the colonoscopy showed active Crohn's there were 5 different types of medication he could use, but if it was scarring causing the pain....... well he just shrugged his shoulders and without suggesting how he would medicate the pain, criticised the fact that my son was on Tramadol and paracetamol (actually suggested by the Gastronomy nurse over the telephone the week before)!!

He said people have problems getting off Tramadol.  My son had no problem back in 2012 when he was on a very high dose for weeks under this consultant post operation?!

We we feel very much up in the air, and I do query why he would denounce treating pain in this way without his own offering of a treatment plan to a young suffering 22 year old student.

Any thoughts on this situation would be very welcome.

Unfortunately a lot of GI doctors don't like treating patients with pain meds. I went for years with no pain relief with a bowel so badly diseased it all bar short length of small bowel had to be removed and was told on numerous times by my GI at the time that pain meds don't work from Crohns pain. I was young at the time and wouldn't have dreamed of questioning it so put up with the agony. I wouldn't now.

Seems odd to say that about Tramadol as it isn't a particularly strong painkiller. If it is scar tissue they can look at operating to remove it. Yes there is a chance the scar tissue will return but in the meantime it will give your son some relief.

    Good luck.

      Thank you for your reply........

i shall definitely ask about scar tissue removal if this is causing the pain.

So... what, if any, pain meds were/are you on or given.  And was it by your GP.

When anyone is in pain especially the inexperienced young, it is hard to assimilate all the information at the time and ask the right questions...even I was stunned into silence with this consultant's remarks!
