Sore heels

Hi all,

Just wondered what all of you who had to sleep on your back did about heel pain. I've looked through the threads and couldn't see one related to this so I've started a new thread.

I'm mostly sleeping in an electric recliner (I use the word sleep very loosely) and find that even in this chair I find my heels are sore and burning. I know there are things on the market to help but thought I'd ask what your experiences were before I went and bought something.

Thanks in advance.

    Hi Ali

Try a cushion under your legs and it takes the pressure of the back of the heel. I had the same problem at can be quite painful

Hi , had same prob even tho I have a memory phone mattress .

I had a small memory phone cushion shaped to go between legs or to open out and rest legs on . Cheap from lidless.

I opened it out and placed it so my heels were hanging over the edge . A pillow should do the same .

try a rolled up towel under your ankles....just enough to raise your heels off the bed...after a time you'll be able to bend your knees and put your feet flat which really helps...its really painful though isn't it....I'm now 14 months post op and 1000% better but remember it well!!

    Hi Ali,

Yes, lots of heel pain without a doubt.  I'm using a memory foam pillow behind my legs so my heels are off the mattress an inch or two.  That seems to help.

Hello from Toronto Canada.....it looks like we all have similar advice,it is just different placement of pillows/towels. I used a pillow between my legs and still had heel pain. I asked my pt and she said it Was caused by nerves and to fold a small hand towel and place under the small of my back but don't fold too thick that you feel a bump...it worked for me....sorry if this reply reads funny as is not formatting on my kobo. Hope one of our suggestions works for you, patricia

      Hello beautiful Toronto,

I have relatives in London and Hamilton and have visited twice now. Hoping to get back there in a year or so.

I understood what you were saying and will take your advice on board.

      Thanks

    Thanks everyone.

I'm sure one of these suggestions will work for me. I'll give them a go. Only 3 more weeks then hopefully I can sleep on my side. I never could settle on my back and this is just one more problem to add to it.

    Hey ho 😊

I'd kill to be able to sleep on my side. I typically sleep on my side/stomach and find it impossible to get comfortable on my back.  I talked to the doctor about that and he mentioned it could be possible to sleep on my side with a pillow between my knees but there was risk if the leg with the implant wasn't lined up with the other leg.  Some type of hip rule precaution.  The doc told me it would be 8 to 16 weeks before I could sleep on my side.

I always slept on my side and found it hard sleeping on my back . I can sleep on good side now but don't find it that comfy anymore . I put a pillow behind me so that I can lean back a little on that and it is more comfy . 8 weeks now

I smothered mine in cream and put cotton socks on and a rolled up towel under my ankles too.  I found this was great, no more sore heels.

I agree with a very slight rolled towel or mini pillow just above the heel area underneath to just lift the pressure off the heel.  I found out with a bigger pillow to lift the heel/leg, then my knee would drop down and then hurt later. That heel pain only lasted maybe 4 weeks for me when I couldn't move my leg much.

    Hi Ali

I got some heel shaped gel pads that cup my heels from the hospital. They used them while I was in and I asked if I could have a set to take home. I did have to pay for the but they really helped and proved invaluable.

Hi I have exactly the same problem. The district nurse said to place a pillow under neath the ankle area. This soes make a different. Dressings are off !! But very swollen knee and bruised as well !! I have been warned it might take a good few weeks or months for things to settle. We are all different. I am a great believer in Reflexology and had a hand massage today. Reagrds Amanda

Hi, I use a body pillow, so when sleeping on my side the pillow goes along the body so that the top half is supported and between legs so that they are kept straight.  When sleeping on my back I put it under my knees and calf so that the heels are just off the mattress.  I used it before my op. and still use it now, it is so comfortable especially when lying on my side.

    Hope you get on well.
