I am 3 1/2 weeks post op Left THR. I have a lot of soreness in my ankle. It is still slightly swollen.  I ice and elevate throughout the day.  Does this usually happen?

I don't know if it happens to everyone but it did happen to me. Sounds like you are doing exactly what I did. Ice, ice, and more ice. I am at 7 weeks post op now and still have some swelling just above and behind my knee. But I saw my surgeon 2 days ago and he was not at all concerned. Keep up the ice and if you feel like calling your surgeon, there is nothing wrong with that. It might make you feel better. Wishing you the best and fastest recovery possible.

    Dear Ellen

For swollen ankles following a total ankle replacement one is recommended to keep one ankle above the level of the heart along with icing. Have you tried that?

Hi I found that when Just sitting to try and keep moving your ankle it will help with keeping the swilling down I was told that if I stand for more than 10 min then my ankle will swell

At least I did. The same day of surgery I was told by therapist to do foot pump exercise to acquire movement. Don’t over do it.

Hi Ellen:  I am six weeks post left THR and my left ankle and knee swell terribly.  The ankle has been better lately, and I learned after having an MRI of the knee that I have a stress fracture.  I have KT tape on it, a brace, and a copper sleeve, all trying to minimize swelling.  ICE is my best friend!  A friend told me yesterday that I should do 20 minutes of ice, followed by 20 minutes of heat, and you have to get the swollen area above your heart - my doctor said above my neck!  It's not easy, but it does get better.  Wishing you all the best - Janet

Hi Ellen, lots of good advice already. I was told by a nurse to go to bed for 2 hours every day. It certainly helped get rid of fluid.
