Sore tongue and mouth

Has anyone experienced soreness of the tongue and roof of mouth? A bit like when you have sucked too many boiled sweets? (I haven't.. honest) It's been about a week now. Nothing much to see, a bit inflamed perhaps but jolly sensitive. No dental or gum probs. Just using salt water rinses and occasional Oraldene rinse to sooth but it doesn't appear to be resolving. Wondered if it's a pred thing.

    Hello Karen,

i have found that my mouth is more sensitive than pre pmr/preds. If I eat anything too hot then my mouth lets me know although by morning all is well again. Regards, tina

I've probably ignored the warnings and just carried on regardless. I'm pleased yours doesn't persist. But also relieved to hear that it's very possibly from the med. Just need to find out how to manage it now. Long haul ahead being on 25 mg.

Hi Karen.  I did recently but until you said this I hadn't thought of it being associated with PMR. It was so painful for about a week but seems to have cleared up now.  Hope yours is better soon

Thanks Lola. Glad yours cleared up. It did get much better at weekend, then I had a very dry mouth this morning after breakfast and it's flared up again as the day has gone on. It gives me hope that it will pass again.

I seem to be very sensitive to different kinds of toothpaste.  One thing that helped me the last time I had a sore mouth was simply drinking peppermint tea.  I have no idea why this was so soothing, but it worked better than yoghurt which has usually helped.  I have sensitive teeth but they've been much worse lately.  I've changed my brand of toothpaste and have not had a recurrence (touch wood).

Out with the peppermint tea then. Yoghurt hasn't really helped much as you say. It's just about finding what works. I have stopped using my normal toothpaste as even the mild mint is agony. I have an unflavoured charcoal toothpaste which cleans well and is much more comfortable. I'll let you know how the tea goes.

Well I had peppermint ea and yes it soothed it right down. So much so that this mornng it's just a minor irritation, so having some more now. I have to be careful with peppermint as it can make me a bit acidy but thinking I could make up a jug and use it as a mouth wash. Thanks for the tip Anhaga.

Well...here is my story...I was on Pred 7.5 mg, went to dentist for regular cleaning, they said I had a lot of plaque! They never say that! Asked if I had dry mouth? I don't know? They said medicines can cause dry mouth. I've seen 1 article that says it's rare but Pred can cause dry mouth.

A week later I had symptoms of Thrush. That went away with anti fungal swish and swallow medicine. Then few weeks later severe red throat, tongue felt raw, swollen gums near esophagus.  Had endoscopy, and nose scope, all said "silent" or mild acid reflux...

Now i use dry mouth toothpaste, it's pretty nice, brush 3 times a day, try to get 3 minutes in.

I've stopped wine, salt (sometimes just have to have a little), spicy foods.

i tried the lemon thing and apple cider vinegar for acid reflux, but it hurt my throat too much and I lost my tastebuds for a month or more.

I feel fluttering in my esophagus almost all day long after I eat or even drink water.

Yes...I've been tested twice for Sjogrens and other RA stuff. I've also developed dry nose.

i HOPE you don't go through what I am...ugh... So...yes...I think it's the Predisone.  I hope yours is just allergy! wink and goes away!

I use omaprazole to protect the stomach lining so doubt it's acid related. Sorry to hear your experience has been so difficult. I've not heard of dry mouth toothpaste. Maybe you are outside the UK but I'll look into it.

I just looked up your Omaprazole...it said Prilosec is in same category.

i tried it for 2 weeks, but am too scared to use it because of what it can do to stomach later.  Is it really working for you? I thought it treats symptoms verses healing, but what I just read said it promotes healing. Can you tell me more about your experience with it and acid reflux?

Initially I had some acid reflux that wasn't resolved by over the counter antacids. Then I started getting quite a severe pain after eating. I take 15 mg capsule of omeprazole on an empty stomach in the morning. It's a proton pump inhibitor so cuts down on the production of stomach acid. It works quite well. Of course given the mouth problem I'm eating quite bland foods but previously even they would start the acid. I find it tends to cause a bit of bloating but I think that's a small price to pay to stay pain free. I've deliberately not read the side effects as I tend to worry about stuff before it happens. A friend had it prescribed as part of treatment for suspected ulcer. She didn't tolerate it well but had good results with lansoprazole. Not sure how they differ.

Oral thrush is a side effect of pred, especially higher doses. I had lesions on tongue and used the prescribed swish and swallow liquid. I was much improved in just a few days and thrush has not returned. Ann 11195

Hi Ann, by lesions do you mean it looked cracked? I had discounted thrush as I thought it would give a white coating oror spots.

Yes, Karen I had cracked sore places all over my tongue and several on the sides of my mouth. It was miserable but did not last long...good meds. Hope you are cured of any mouth issues soon! Ann11195

Turned out to be thrush Ann. Even though I didn't have the white yuk. I have the swish and swallow med and only 2 doses and the relief is remarkable. Thanks for pointing me in that direction. I would never have thought it myself as I don't have the white gunky stuff usually associated with thrush. Boy has it been painfull. Continuing with meds for a few days more yet. Doc has put it on my repeat as she says it's very common whilst on pred. A sign that the immune system is struggling.
