Sounds in ear

so this is going to sound a little weird and might be a little confusing so please try to bare with me lol. So basically whenever i hear sounds ( but not all the time) weather it is a car in the background, a bathroom fan, someone talking or someone talking on tv etc. i hear this strange faint whistling noise along side it. its mostly on my right ear but on the left as well. Im not sure if its tinnitis because i dont hear this whistling when its quiet. i do hear ringing when its quiet and i know THATS tinnitus but this whistling is a different type of noise.

Hi Ryan,
I suffer from a similar thing too. I have typical tinnitus like you where i hear a ringing in quiet environments but the more troubling symptom is a white noise sort of sound when there are other sounds present. This most often occurs for me when driving in the car, listening to music, the sound of running water or fans as you say. I'm not sure what it is either so can't help much there but sometimes it's comforting to know you're not alone. My audiologist said it's likely a form of hyperacusis and this may be the case as i also have some sensitivity to loud sounds too but sounds that cause the whistling sound don't have to be very loud at all. One other thing i find is that it's worse in different types of environments too. For example tiled echoey rooms are the worst. The audiologist's advice to me in order to manage the tinnitus and this other symptom was to reduce my stress level in order to reduce the intrusiveness of both symtoms. FYI my symptoms started after noise trauma.

thanks for the response i appreciate it. sounds we have sort of a same problem. Not sure if is hyperacusis because i dont have snesistivity to any sound or frequencies. Sometimes i can make the volume of the ringing better when i move my head a different direction...is that the same for you?

No worries. No, changing my head position doesn't have any affect on the whistling sound. Opening my mouth as wide as i can does however stop my normal tinnitus sound. I think it is quite common for changes in head/jaw position to negatively or positively affect tinnitus. Do you know how and when your problems started?

my problem after my tinnitus started. at first it was just the tinnitus but i got used to it and it still doesnt bother me to this day. But the whistling started a couple weeks after i got my ears irrigated last june. I remember for a while it got better or at least i started to ignore it. either way i didnt hear it anymore for a while but now it started back up or maybe got worse im not too sure. hopefully it gets better as its annoying but its not disabling.
