Sourdough bread versus ordinary bread

I suffer IBS and used to have really bad bloating cramps and usual symptoms with IBS, but a few a weeks ago I started eating sourdough bread the white sort and the difference it made to my symptoms no more bloating and guts in general much improved, sourdough bread is fermented the old traditional way of making bread where the lactobacillus probiotics ferment and digest the wheat and gets rid of most of the phytic acid, so just wondering if anyone eats sourdough bread and has experienced any benefits.

I may be wrong, is this type of bread Irish or is it Soda bread eaten in the Irish Republic.

I suppose as you say above you will need to eat the stuff regular to get any benefit

Hi, no it's not soda bread or Irish, it's the way bread used to be made for hundreds of years, fermentation, the famous sourdough is San Francisco formula eaten by the 49ers gold miners, the sourdough is the starter what make the flour etc rise and ferment, loads of info online just put in about sourdough and you can get the history it's pretty interesting.

I have not tried sourdough bread but I've noticed that when I eat rye bread my symptoms subside a bit. I will definitely try some soon. Thanks for the info and confirmation.

Hi, I've been doing quite some reading on the issue and apparently wheat is hard to digest and can easily aggravate the intestines it also contains high amounts of phytic acid which is an anti-nutrient, but when Sourdough is used to make bread the lactobacillus probiotics digest much of the wheat etc for you and also reduces the phytic acid right down, the result is it's easy to digest and all the goodness is released into the bread through fermentation, I eat the white sort real sourdough bread no bakers yeast, and to top it all it tastes great.

    Hi Martin

Have been eating sour dough for around a year now, initially alongside the fodmap diet, has worked wonders for me and I've now been able to re introduce normal breads without any negative effect

    Give it a try
