Spasm / shock sensation when trying to sleep?

Hi all! I have been getting the STRANGEST sensations just as I'm about to fall asleep, and in the most comfortable position about to pass out basically.. It's like an electric shock or a spasm almost? In my throat. And my chest also at times. And it wakes me right up! And freaks me out. I have been dealing with a crazy amount of anxiety within the past month or two, and I'm wondering if this could also be another physical symptom related to anxiety and if anyone else has gotten this before! I've been also getting muscle pains and some tingling / numbness throughout the day, in my arms especially.. and the feeling of a "lump" in my throat. I have been to the ENT, my neurologist, all sorts of doctors, I'm all checked out and fine physically. So it has to be anxiety related, right? But it's quite scary.. especially when you are being SHOCKED awake and then it's hard to get back to bed! rolleyes

Hello. Yes -- the reason I'm awake right now is because of this, as well as because of some eye irritation. Anxiety has impacted a lot of things in my life, but my sleep schedule has been the absolute worst. Every time I sleep I have all kinds of feelings and fears. Shock sensations like you have, I get all the time. I also worry that if I fall asleep I won't wake up, or I'll wake up with something wrong...like my eyes won't function, or I won't be able to breathe, or my legs won't work. The only thing that helps me at this point is listening to relaxing sounds on YouTube and watching TV with low volume. It's currently 2AM for me, and I need to wake up in less than 5 hours......it's the worst. I understand how you feel. But it'll be okay! We just have to try to get some rest....mentally, physically, emotionally.

    Hugs,

    Nicholas

Oh my goodness, thank you so much for responding! smile Makes me feel less crazy. It is the same for me, without a doubt. Worrying about not waking up once I go to sleep or that there will be something wrong when I wake up.. that fear of going to sleep and then it keeps you up! And then you feel the physical pain from it. Our bodies and minds are incredibly wild. I hope you were able to get some rest! It's such a nightmare.

This is all anxiety related. I do get the brain zap and there are a lot of people who get this shock through their body. Scary I know. Are you on a antidepressant? I think I have read some where that for some people and some anxiety meds that this can happen also, but  it sounds like you might want  to see your doc and get on something that might help you with this.

It's so scary! It really puts me at ease getting your input and hearing I'm not alone and / or going crazy! 😩 I'm not on any antidepressants, but I get chronic migraines so I take Trokendi which is Topamax if you've ever heard of it! For the migraines nightly. And also birth control. That makes complete sense that certain meds would give this effect! I am beginning to think that the birth control pill that I am on is heightening my anxiety, which I suppose is possible..but I have never experienced anxiety like this before! With the physical effects and all. You are so right..it's something I am going to speak to my doctor about, for sure!
