Specialised surgeons

Hi, is there anybody within the Greater Manchester area UK that can recommend an upper GI surgeon as I am at the point of desperation and, not coping. The level of care I am receiving is at best a shambles built on stilts. Presently under the care of Paul Goldsmith at Manchester Royal Infirmary and, I have read today that the main consultant who is Mr Li specialises in Balearic surgery which is his main speciality. I have not had the pleasure of seeing him albeit my appointment letters indicate that that is who the appointment is with. His testamonial also includes oesophageal cancer. I’m going two steps forward and, ten back.  An urgent CT scan was done 3 weeks ago and, the follow up appointment has been booked for the 16th April. My condition has not changed and, is affecting my anxiety now, not coping very well at all. I have tried numerous times to get through to his secretary but, as per she’s on more anual leave

I think you might be at the point where you consider asking for a second opinion, something that everyone is entitled to under the NHS, and which can be a constructive process amongst experienced surgeons.   One thing that is important is that the second opinion is given by somebody whom your current surgeon respects, and raising the question with them can be a constructive process in itself, handled in the right way.

Thank you Alan, I think the turning point for us was at the last appointment when my partner asked him about the oesopegetomy and, Paul Goldsmith said “who told you that you would be having an oesopegetomy?” My partner said YOU did when we saw you in December. He then said that was the least of his concern at that moment and, needed to find out what was causing the distension. Which is very understandable but, he seemed to flip the subject and, I’m just grateful that my partner was with me when he broke that news to me. I had an Urgent CT scan 3 weeks yesterday and, don’t have a follow up appointment until 16th April, it is a complete mine field getting through to the correct person, his secretary takes more vacations than anybody I have heard of and, you are left on hold for over an hour to outpatient appointments. So I’m going to discuss all of this with my GP today. Kind regards Alan and, take care
