Specialist visit today

Well at least the specialist today admitted I have a problem with my hip replacment, 10mm below knee naturally, and 10mm above knee added by surgery, total of 20mm difference in leg length.

He did make comment, natural leg length discrepancy should have been indentified before surgery, DUHHHHH????

He also admitted there is a link between LLD and sciatica, just the opposite to what I was told at the hospital, dooo they really think I'm an idiot and don't have access to the internet.

I was armed with article from Leeds Ortheopedic unit, available on the internet, and I showed it too him, he confirmed he had read the same article, and said good girl at least you are educating yourself.

He has then ordered up an MRI, and re-booked me to see him again 14 Jan.

He did his best to say there must be another answer to helping you with your problem other than re-doing the surgery.

I pointed out to him I have been doing my post surgery exercises in the swimming pool to the best of my ability for 11 months now, when I got the feeling to was going to say to me about visiting a physio, that put paid to that idea, what more does he want me to dooooo to make myself better I don't know.

I felt I won the battle but maybe not the war, we will see.

Sorry to hear about all your problems.   I had an emergency hip replacement a couple of months ago in Spain, whilst on holiday I had an accident and broke not only my hip but my wrist.  As I was in state of shock not sure whether any measurements were taken, though of course xrays were!

A number of years previously I had a knee replacement on same left side (not a success and meant left leg longer than right).   Following the hip replacement the problem has got worse.  I am terrified of going other knife again, and in the meantime have found comfort from seeing a podiatrist (on NHS)  who has made me a orthotic sole which I put into the right shoe so as to even me up.  There is about 14 mm difference in leg length, but I have found this makes walking and resulting back pain less painful.   Not a permanent solution but it might help you.

    Good luck!

      Geraldine, Lyn,

Those orthotic soles can be absolutely wonderful, I saw a physio at work, and she gave me a pair which were I think about £37 ($54) on amazon, and they were amazing, they straightened out my foot and made me walk much better.  I would have been in problems far earlier if I had not had them.

      Hi Graham and Lyn

I live in Surrey and here the NHS supply you with a pair a year.   It may vary according to region.   They are made to measure by a firm based in Salisbury who used to manufacture army boots, but now find there is more demand for orthotics for senior folk.   A sign of the times!

      All the best   Geraldine
