Spinal anaesthetic experiences

Hi, I had my THR 6 days ago and just wondered if anybody had experienced similar problems with their spinal anaesthetic with sedation.

I was awake at the end of the surgery and could feel the stitching being done. More a sensation than pain but in the recovery area I could immediately move my unoperated leg and had excruciating pain in my operated leg. Was able to move this leg shortly after as well. Took a while for any pain relief to kick in and really shocked me, didn't expect to have any immediate pain until several hours after the op. Have to have my other hip done in 8 weeks time so praying the anaesthetic is stronger next time round.

It's quite a shock to the system having this surgery but have to say the information on this forum is brilliant.

Hi Mick, that's exactly what I expected to happen but sadly I felt excruciating pain immediately after being moved into the recovery area. Quite frightening because I didn't know if that was what was expected. Clearly not though!

I chose the spinal because general anesthesia makes me sooo ill.  The sedation wore off at least 30 min before they were done...my neck was killing me it was folded below my head so i asked the anethesiologist to flatten it.  I could hear hammering and grinding and I told them the soud of the tools was starting to make me nautious ... they kept commenting "just a little more"....also felt the tugging sensation when being sewed up....

Unfortunately, I was still really sick from the sedation after.....and spent a sleepless night in a lot of pain while they couldn't "up" my meds until they got the ok from the DR - which wasn't until after 9 the next morning.  I was truly at my witts end with the pain "in the butt".  Very exhausting!

Hi Mel, sounds like your experience was similar to mine. I believed I'd be numb for a few hours after the op but wide awake. Didn't plan for the horrendous pain immediately after the op. I'll just have to pray hip no.2 will be better!
