I had double ALIF L4-S1 in April this year. 4 screws and two cages. In through stomach which was the most uncomfortable part. Fusion was a success to a certain degeee. About to go back into hospital to have another 8 screws and 4 rods inserted to secure the posterior side of L4-S1. This is due to Arthritis and not as a result of a failed fusion.

This will be my 4th surgery on the same area. I really should have been fused at my second op but it was done as an emergency due to QC.

You'll get conflicting views on here, ultimately it's a decision you'll have to make. I'd do it again if required.

Hope you get on ok. Keep us posted.

My first op was an emergency and realistically I should of been fused so this time I believe my new consultant is going Also fuse the last decompression op.

Yes I had one 2003 l4/5 privately, worst decision I ever made, been in chronic pain ever since, had own business and never returned back to work, mine lead to a thoracic arachnoid cyst (extremely rare) compressing my spinal cord causing muscle spasms all the time in my shoulders and neck, nerve pain down my arms and legs, I also have cervical degeneration with multi level bone spurs, c6 bulging disc, once your lumbar spine has been fused it puts pressure on the rest of your spine, I have spent years trying to find something that works, been on all opioids, done withdrawal twice as you become dependant on them, I'm sorry this could sound scary and an opp may work for you but I don't know anyone that it has only causes more pain, I would give anything to turn the clock back and prevent anyone going through this, my chiro practice did say tho that he could have prevented surgery and I believe him he sorted my husband out after a bad car accident, it took 2 years but he's working and not suffering line I am, good luck 😊

My other option is another decompression op which I would prefer but I only had one 3 year ago and only gave me a small amount of relief but that was a emergency op. I think people get that feed up with suffering and after trying alternative s . That they hope this will work. Like anything what works for one might not work for another. Will think long and hard b4 I make any decision and will do some research

I am fused from L2 to S1. I ran out of options and had the surgery. In hindsight, it was the best thing that could have happened to me compared to how I was living before the surgery. That being said, it was a process to recover. It took much longer than I was told it would take. I learned patience, determination, and how to really take care of myself with compassion. I wish you the very best! Keep us informed!
