Spinal Stenosis pain

Just wanted to know if anyone else out there seems to have most of their  pain settle in the hip area even though there is pain in other parts of the leg as well? I also have lower back cramping pain in my lower back when I stand for very long or walk very far. Used to help if I would bend to touch my toes and then just hang for a minute or 2 but now that doesn't help. But getting off my feet for just a  minute or two and it is better until I resume activity, so I am up and down if I try to do anything. I am wondering if these two are connected? Am having problems finding a doc in my area that I feel I can trust and everyone is a little nervous about their backs anyway.

Hi Judy...I'm having some similar issues a year after my lumbar surgery. It was to correct stenosis relating to spondylolisthesis, L4, 5, S1. The surgery went great - I have no more back-stabbing at L5 and the shooting sciatic pain is 80% or so gone.

I think what you and I are having is muscle and connective tissue trouble.

It doesn't sound like you had surgery, but pain and the tension that goes with it can really tighten our muscles. I've found some exercises online for "periformis muscle stretches" and I'm starting them gently and slowly, hoping it will help me. Maybe you can try this.

Where do you live? I'm in the US - Arizona.

I am in So. Texas so you and I definately don't need heat therapy! LOL No I haven't had surgery and the radiology reports on discs and arthritis are all real good. Have one small heriation that the Dr. thought would go away. I am a VERY tense person to begin with. Part of my hip pain is made far worse because I am always tense and it gets better if I can remember to relax, which I can't. I am going to start PT next month and will have to see how that goes. I figure they will want me to stretch. My problem is I am so tired all the time from other issues that I have and from not doing anything that it is gonna take some umpfh to get going! Let me know how it seems to work for you. I will do the same!

My solution to stress, tension and insomnia has been drugs...I'm now on Buspar and Doxepin and it seems a good combo. Older drugs that aren't addictive in the newer drug sense of the word. Long ago I decided if I needed help to manage my anxiety, meds were far better than booze or banging my head on the wall! If you're not into taking meds, try meditation, self-hypnosis, etc. I could never focus well enough to have them work. There is a wonderful Dr. in Tucson who sells CD's that target many things - pain also. You can find him at healingwithhypnosis   dot   com. (This site doesn't let one use web or email addresses)

Yeah booze isn't a good thing. I think most people with depression have either smoked pot or found another drug or alcohol cause we all just want to feel better.I am on duloxetine currently which help and alprazolan as needed, which I take at night to get to sleep and a bi-polar drug to help me to sleep that I think is making me exhausted. Gonna try to get off of that and for hip and back pain, Ibuprophen but sometimes it just raises my bloodpressure and does nothing else. Supposed to do PT and see if that helps but I don't hold out for too much hope of that!  I definately know that tension does affect my pain and I am NEVER not tense! But I can't live on meds to not be or I would be a zombie! Thanks!

Hi Judy, i am in Colorado. I had spinal surgery on June 2. I had a triple laminectomy in L3, 4 & 5. I also had a fusion of L4 & L5, plus two rods and a basket. I can not recommend spinal surgery enough. The excruciating pain is gone.  I can't take opiates so I didn't, but the pain was nothing compared to what I had been in. I took an occasional Tylenol (usually after Occupational Therapy).

That being being said, I developed a pain in my back, my thigh and my groin. I went to see my spine surgeon. He took back x-rays. My back was fine. My hip however was gone. I have avascular necrosis of the hip.  I now need hip replacement surgery. I can't wait for the surgery. I know that it is not going to be any worse than my spine surgery. The recovery period for both is the worse because no BLT (bending, lifting or twisting) for 4-6 months, but NO PAIN.

So find an orthopedist that you can trust and get the surgery or surgeries done. Google orthopedic surgeons, ask friends, ask your Dr.  You will find a orthopod you can trust even if it is out of the town you live in. Don't be afraid of traveling for surgery or of the surgery.

I can take like hydrocodone and it helps but no one wants you on a steady diet of it and I don't either if I can just get rid of the whole problem in the first place. I am using Ibuprophen but it make my BP go up. Yeah I have a friend that had surgery for herniated discs and she said she has never been sorry but after you read the possible outcomes it does scare me but let the pain get as bad as it was when it first started and I will be standing in line to get it! LOL Thanks for the info and take care!

All of my research and my Drs have also told me that for bone pain Tylenol is the best drug to take. For some reason it helps when other meds don't.  I have friends that have taken medical marihuana eatibles prior to surgery, but I have never tried it. One friend bought MM pills, he said that you get all the benefits of the pain killer but no THC in them so no high.
