Splenectomy and Covid-19

Hello. My spleen was removed in 2012 following injury and bleeding. I was always told to be aware of bacteriological infection and I take low dose antibiotics as prophylaxis. What is the function of the spleen in fighting viruses, and does not having a spleen put me in a high risk category for complications arising from Covid-19 infection. Very little information available online!

Hi. I feel sorry for all you for having ur spleen removed. I hope you all will be safe. But I also wanted to confirm if I'll be having the same problem in the future. I feel a sharp pain at the bottom of my left rib almost near the mid part but this pain just recently started. I've always been a wimpy kid til I became an adult. I'm 30 and a female by the way. The pain doesn't come everyday and didn't last long. Should I worry about this? Thank you for your response guys.

Hi
I don't know if anyone will see this.
I have a littoral cell angioma in my spleen; a benign growth that is meaning I have to choose whether to keep my spleen (but risk it rupturing under the pressure of the slowly-growing tumour) or have a splenectomy to remove that risk but obviously introduce all of the risks associated with removal.
I know having the choice might sound like a lucky position to some of you but im finding it really difficult.
I'd love to hear real word experience of living without a spleen; have read the above with interest.
I am 39 years old, have two children under 5 and enjoy a bit of sport (running, football [soccer]).
Thanks 😃

No spleen for me has been totally fine up until this pandemic! Just been worrying alot more than i should, what ifs?!.....pre pandemic it was a breeze and i wouldn't even notice, everything i done pre splenectomized...i continued doing, drinking etc, so the decision is totally up to you i would say, if it's a treat now then possibly get it removed 👍🏻 good luck.

My spleen was also removed during 2018. I got vaccinated against covid 19 on May 17 and got no problems. I just take high dose antibiotics for 3 days after getting vaccine shot. So as per my experience, vaccine (sinovac) is safe for us.

Hello, i have had a splenectomy after a car accident 13 years ago, take penicillin everyday, get a flu jab every year and pneumonia every 5....have been totally fine up until this virus, riddled with anxiety now, and i smoke on top of it all, 35 years old, iv heard mulitple contradictions, but what i'd love to hear from is someone who has contracted the virus post and pre-vaccine as iv had my jabs. How did they fair out etc??.
