Splenic flexure pain

Hi all. I have been suffering with pain in upper left abdomen below the ribs for 7 months now. I've had loads of tests and nothing has come back showing anything. Had faecal calprotectin test done and that was normal so the docs have not done an endoscopy. Sometimes the pain ramps up to where I can constantly feel it and I can agrivate it with movement such as twisting or stretching Other times it just rumbles along and I hardly notice it but it's always there. Do any of you guys ever get this?

The best way that I can explain the location of the pain is like this. Make a fist with your left hand and place it half way down your left rib line just underneath. Where your little finger rests is where the pain is mostly. I does travel about a little bit but it's mostly there. This normal for ibs?

I think i have the same problem. Ive been back and forth to my GP for a few years with abdominal discomfort and he has written me up as having IBS.

Curiously i dont exhibt the typical symtoms eg diarrhoeh or constipation or any nasties like that, at least not to any significant degree as to make it obvious.

    I'm tall,slim,athletic,ideal BMI ,i feel i have a good diet,non smoker rare drinker.

I get this pain under both ribs at the front. The best way i can describe it is that it feels like my belly is too big to fit under my lower rib cage so its fighting to get out ! I get it on the left and the right and sometimes down the left front side . Its almost constant and worse when i sit down as of course the abdomen is slightly squished.

I've never been referred for any oscopies . I did do a private self administered FiT test about a year ago which came back normal.

I dont know what the solution is and maybe there isnt one? Maybe its just modern life, stress and anxiety?

I reckon that had it been something more sinister, it would have showed itself by now ?

Thanks for replying. I had not turned on email notifications so assumed no one had replied to my post, which, in the end, I decided to delete.

I'm seeing (by "Zoom") a gastroenterologist on Thursday this week, so I'll report back anything useful. My suspicion is that some kind of irritation of the top of the bowel (the transverse colon) or even the diaphragm muscle (the breathing muscle that brings on hiccups and stitch pains) can occur. The problem is that fear and anxiety are easily brought on, and separating the effects of this from the whole thing is nigh on impossible. Different people have different thresholds for fear, and I suspect mine is lower than average, sadly.

yes,you more than likely have SPLENIC Flecture Syndrome. It's not that common, does not seem to show up with x rays and other intrusive tests, and because it is not life threatening is not seem to be taken serious by medics , that is if they recognise or know about it. i saw 8 different doctors before it was diagnosed. The first seven prescribed antibiotics twice, fibogel, antacids and something else that caused severe diorrhea . I took myself to A+E tree time because the pain/ discomfort was so severe, even there it was put down to "just I.B.S".. It was only when i saw a consultant gastroentarologist that it was recognised. So you need to see a gut specialist to get anywhere.

i've now had it five years and my quality of life has greatly suffered.

What helps for me is Deflatine, which breaks down the gas trapped in the splenic region, avoiding gas producing foods, small meals and cutting down on my beloved red wine. I've also been prescribed Amitryptiline, this reduces the inflamation and discomfort in the splenic region.

In conclusion , I don't think this distressing condition receives the attention it should. good luck

    I have the same problem.

    very inflated and very consterpated.

    the pain is unbearable.

Its she second time i have it now and its been 3 months.

I only get this when eaten onion by accident and then inflate hectic just to never go away.

the weird thing is that no doctor believes is that when I was literally giving up on life I went for a colonoscopy and when I woke up a 2 minute wind blew out of me with ease and my stamach were flat...and all symptoms disappeared right there..everything normal.

the wind they blew in or something pushed something back in place.

it is not the prep you drink before you go for the procedre I tested this.

when I got onion in by accident again 4 months ago it started that same night after 4 years of no symptoms.

i went for another colonoscopy and it didnot do anything but also when I wake up only a little wind came out not like the previous one at all...it was done in diff ways.

The docters dont believe my colonoscopy story and thats a huge problem because that is where the answer lies in this issue.

we all feel the same symptoms...i also feel the foggy brain like i have been drinking strong pills that knocks me and then i did not..the pain in the back all the same.

now that i know it can be fixed instantly and that its not IBS i will not stop till I find the cure...

    Ibs is wrong diagnosis...

its rapid inflation that pushes something the wrong way and it stayes like that.

maybe a NG tube might work to get rid of the gass and fluids and pressure in belly and intestine and cure the problem. otherwise i will carry on to search the colonoscopy cure.

maybe the one docter sucked the air out and the other one didnot afterwards.

seems logical, the procedure could have dislodged /dispersed the gas in the flexture and so relieving the discomfort. Trouble being it will return. i guess overtime we learn about this condition and try to modify our diet, exercise and lifestyle to make it bearable. I'm a retired senior nurse with 40 years service with the N.H.S. mainly in mental health but also some work with gastroenterology.I had never heard of S.F.S. until having it. It seems quite uncommon and this proved true when 8 medics did not have a clue what was causing the problem until I saw a specialist. My mental health training and experience lead me to believe a stressful lifestyle can be one of the causes of

IBS and diverticular disease and I had both before the arrival of SFS.

Another possible cause is too much belly fat and a sedentary lifestyle , who knows , no one can give a definitive cause, certainly not the medics. Best wishes S.F.S. sufferers.

    hello,

very specific question here! i relate to everything you said as far as the pain on my left side so bad to where i cant even move or take a deep breath. but, this pain only comes up when i have a bowel movement, and its so bad from start to finish yet once im done, the pain goes away completely and i feel fine. has anyone else experienced this? i have yet to find someone who has/: ive had so many tests done and everything came up normal. eventually got diagnosed with colon spasms but it just feels so much worse than what they told me.

I'm having the exact same issues with left side pain. My gastrointerologist told me it's splenic flexure. It's usually not debilitating but I ate bruschetta with lots of tomatoes and onion and woke up at 2 am in pain. My left side and back hurt which I read that SF can cause this pain. I'll get the side pain occasionally but never this severe. The only thing I can think of is the bruschetta I had at dinner. I'm not sure what will take this pain away but I want it gone. I have IBS with constipation and have had 2 complete colonoscopies and a felxi-sig over the past two years.

I am wondering if i have splenic flexure syndrome too. I can't think what else could be causing my symptoms now other than pancreatic cancer, which hasn't been fully ruled out unfortunately until I get a good scan done. So far I've had an ultrasound, blood and stool tests, chest x ray, endoscopy and colonoscopy with no answers.

Since the end of December I started getting nauseous and burping a lot. Then i got discomfort under my left ribs and the nausea got so bad I sometimes vomit. Nausea medication doesnt help. I also had some diarrhoea/loose stools which is ok for now. I've lost weight unintentionally. As I write this Im feeling so nauseous and my left side feels very uncomfortable.

I'm so worried and I feel like no one cares or is taking me seriously? I'm in NZ and the public healthcare system sucks..when my doctor referred me for further testing they said I have to wait 3 months just for a consultation. While I feel horrible! I got so weak from the vomiting and diarrhoea.

side note, how do you start your own post? for some reason I can only reply to others, I can't see where to start my own.

This is what I needed 2 find. I've been suffering for 3 years and it's the worse pain of my life. I have been researching if this has to do with my vagus nerve. Left sided back pain through the chest and in the oblique. heart pounds and I can actually see it. clammy cold sweats and sometimes I vomit bile due to me not having a gallbladder( found it was healthy after removed). seems to flare greatly with menstrual cycle. I sit with my back pressed against the edge of my bed so often its scarred. Ruining my life.

gas x, charcoal tabs, ppis. nothing has worked. I feel mines may b due to vagus nerve issues as well due to the other disruptions I'm having.
