Has anyone tried to split the pill in 2 and take half in the morning and half in the evening? is it good idea to do that? any side effects or concerns with that approach?

Depends on the medication, I would talk to your Dr or pharmacist.

Citalopram 10mg is low dose. But doc normally need to get your reaction in 7 day on it..up to 14 days..

But if you feel you need to up or split your dose you can but keep track of it and give nother 7 days at least..

hope this helps..im 4 months in and 60 mg a day works for me no... but there is better things to drink at night like adco Alzam 1mg to relax a bit and then focos on citalopram only morning and lunch...all up to your body and how it handles it over time..we are all different... but also if we dont try and ask we will never know hey..

      Kind regards

Citalopram and Escitalopram are not the same meds, they are two different SSRIs, even though they may be seen as each others cousins. 10 mg a day is the normal starting dose for Escitalopram for most conditions, and not particularly low. Many people is helped well from it just staying at 10mg a day. The max is 20mg a day, for those who need it, but that is to be decided together with one's doctor. I don't know what the dosages is for Citalopram, but you can not take 60mg a day of Escitalopram.

You CAN however take your daily dose of Escitalopram divided into two daily doses, i.e. 5mg morning, 5mg evening/night.

I'm considering doing the same to help reduce the anxiety - what current side effects are you getting ?

I havent done it yet. was thinking of doing it today since today i have to double the dose. I'm in 1 week in to Escitalopram. so i take my 1/4th pill at night before bed. what i have noticed is that my mornings are horrible with lot of anxiety but evening are ok. so wondering if medication is starting to wear off after 12 hours or so.

I'm on 20mg a day, would you advise taking 10mg in the morning then 10mg before bed?

Ive been on them for 5 days now. Anxiety the biggest side effect so far for me which have been told that is normal and need to ride it through but if splitting the tablet helps I'd rather do that?

      Hi... Imanony!!

I did start with 10 mg per day and after 2 weeks i ask to up the dose to 20 mg then again after a month i felt i needed it sometimes mid day..As if it works out to quick!! Then doc gave me Adco Alzam 1mg so i could relax beter!! But after a week or so i tried 20mg Citalopram morning at 6 and then 12.00 and then 6.00 again and did not need anything else!! Just felt relaxed and possitive all day in and out..But with 1 problem..sleeping pattern becomes bad... So i am feeling A ++ Taking Citalopram 20mg 3 times a day but now are given sleeping pills also...but hope to sleep well again but 4 now it seems the pills keep me going pretty hard and helps to loose weight and sleep..

How are you coping and have you used other meds before??

      Kind regards

Yes you can but should try to maintain stable dose that your body can cope with it at least 14 days in a row...if you feel its to strong the first day..i would still try 2 or more days cause it is a bit of a shock to our bodys the first time but you should settle in quickly.. 7 to 14 days

    Kind regards

I tried that, didn't seem to have any effect. I generally take 20 mg at night.

      Hey imanony...

Really helps me with morning noon and night... 20mg at moment..i never knew when the pil kicked in so finally i do know and feel a 20mg kicks in pretty hard at 3 times a day..60mg daily sometimes i up to 80mg as needed..

But i would try with 10mg in morning and 10mg at afternoon and normal 20mg at night..do talk to docter after you have tried it for at least 7 days before up again..hope it works for you..we all cope different with these chemicals ...

      Take care

OK, I checked now, and Citalopram has a max Daily Dose of 40mg. If you have been told by your Dr. to take a higher dose, then I guess there's a reason for that. But I thought it was important for others to know at least.

(And as I said further up in the thread the OP was asking about Escitalopram, which is a different SSRI med, which has a max dose of 20mg a day).

However, no matter if your doctor has told you to use 60mg a day of Citalopram, SSRIs are definitely NOT "take as needed" type drugs. You're not supposed to take an extra one now and then, as these type of meds work over time with the level of Serotonin in the brain "increasing". It's not something that works instantly, like a pain killer or a benzodiasepine (calming, for anxiety etc.) or something, so you shouldn't go up and down in dosage from one day to the next and so on (besides 80mg is twice the max dose of Citalopram). You're not supposed to feel the SSRIs (which both Citalopram and Escitalopram is) "kick in pretty hard" three times a day. You're not really supposed to feel it kick in like that at all, as that's not how the med is supposed to work. It's supposed to work gradually and over time to help with anxiety or depression etc. If you need something to take as needed for anxiety or something else you need to get something else completely from your doctor, and not pop an extra SSRI every now and again when having a hard time.

These drugs are influencing our brain chemistry as it is when we take them, so it's very important to take them correctly. If we up the dosages to much or take the meds like a roller coaster, that can really mess with our brain chemistry in a bad way.

Also, if you decide to give someone advice about medication another time please remember that Citalopram and Escitalopram are two different meds with different dosages + you don't take SSRIs on an "on needed" basis. And to not increase dosages of meds without talking to their Dr first (and initially to stay within the max dosages written in the meds pamflet/leaflet).
