Sprained ankle (1-2); how long do I need the bandage that I have?

Hi,

I have sprained my ankle last Thursday, grade 1-2 according to the hospital. They have wrapped it like this (https://1drv.ms/i/s!Amc3E5yL69i4hrF60imHdDz9uWB_NQ).

They made an appointment for me in 2 weeks (16th of February) to check the ankle and remove the bandage, and gave me crutches for walking.

I was just wondering, is this not too long? The bandage is quite tight and I have read that small movements are good for recovery. However, this is not possible at the moment. Wouldn't it be better to switch more soon to this kind of bandage https://physicalsportsfirstaid.files.wordpress.com/2014/06/sprained-ankle-wrap-step-3.jpg[/b] ?

Thanks in advance!

Best,

Vincent

    Hi Vincent,

I would advise following the hospital's instructions and staying bandaged and off your injured ankle until they see you again.

A grade II sprain is moderately severe and should be treated with respect.

You didn't say what ligaments or tendons were injured in your sprain, or how much pain and swelling you suffered, so it is difficult to assess your situation, or your long-term prospects.

Yes, movement is important for recovery, when your damaged ankle is ready for it. If in doubt, call your attending physician and ask for more clarification on this.

    Good luck.

    Hi,

Thanks for the response! Clear answer. I'll just wait then smile

One last question: what do you think of gentle cycling in a gym, as long as I don't feel pain? Or not recommended until the bandage is off?

    Best,

    Vincent
