Sprained ankle 8 weeks ago

So while trying to mow the lawn, I fell into our pond and was unable to bear weight on it. So I hobbled to the car w/ my daughter's help and drove to the doctors. They took xrays and came back with no break or fracture, so I went home did the Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. 4 weeks later, still have pain and the swelling is like a bracelet around my ankle and there is tenderness along my outer foot (the bone that leads to the baby toe). I had more xrays and again was told it was only a sprain and to take it easy. 3 weeks after that appointment, I went back to doctor again.. no xray this time, but a referral for an MRI. The swelling is the same, the pain is the same. I wake up with my ankle aching every morning and it aches when I drive to and from work (which is an hour each way).
I have had previous ankle sprains before and even torn the ligaments in that same ankle to the point that up my outer leg turned black and blue just below my knee. That hurt like no tomorrow, but it was a lot better 8 weeks out than this one is.
My right ankle never bruised this time around. I am just frustrated and can't do the things I enjoy and am limited on the amount of walking I can due becasue of this and my job requires a lot of walking from time to time.
Suggestions and ideas welcome. Thanks

Hi. Seems like your being told what it's not but not what it is. There's always a reason and if your dr can't tell you then I'd be going for other opinions. Somet they get it wrong. Because your pain has gone on a long time. I still have pain after almost 5 months but that's with break fib frac tib and plate and screws I never expected this long a recovery.

Hi Mic
Wow, that is quite a story you have there. I sympathize with you on your confusion and doubts about these unsettling symptoms in your ankle.
Since you have a history of injuries affecting recently hurt ankle, I would guess your recent accident insult to the ankle also triggered a long-standing compromised ankle condition.
Is your doctor a specialist in orthopedics or foot issues? I don't understand why your doctor is so nonchalant about your condition. Your pain and symptoms sound like a loud honking horn alerting you that something is awry.
If your condition stays the same or worsens even more I would promptly ask for a referral to a practitioner that specializes in these ankle issues. Based on my ankle injury experience, I'm shocked your doctor did not immediately put you in a CAM boot to prevent further possible injury while they investigate the real nature of your ailment.
I hope you get the advice and professional care you need to get over this hurdle. Good luck.

So got the results back from my MRI...I have a partial tear to my peroneal brevis muscle and a partial tear of the anterior talofibular ligament. I go in to see an orthopedic surgeon on the 5th of September.
Question is... Do you think/know if surgery will be needed? It's been 8 weeks since I injured it. It hasn't been casted it immobilized.
