Sprained Ankle but on the inside. Is this normal?

I sprained my left Ankle 3 days ago. However, this has occurred on the inside of my ankle. The doctor said this was very unusual. Is this normal for this to occur on the inside? I have a lot of swelling what should I do? I can't walk and doctor didn't offer much advise.

How did this happen? It's less likely but definitely possible. In the meantime you should rest (RICE). don't walk on it. They should do an X-ray to be sure no bones are broken/fractured.

Hi Jason.
Sorry your having a hard time. It is possible to fracture the inner part of your ankle and it is unfortunately missed a lot by Drs.
I did that same as you when I was 14 I had it xrayed and was told it was fine. Then fast forward to my late twenties I started having a lot of pain in the inner part of my left ankle. I was referred to an ortho surgeon after having Physio and acupuncture.
The xrays showed x2 old breaks one in my talus and another bone I can never remember the name of. I’m now looking at my 8th ankle op because I have got bone on bone osteoarthritis on the inner part of my left ankle. I had an ankle fusion in May last year as there was nothing else that could be done.
Because of my age I’m not suitable for an ankle replacement and bone transplant/graft wouldn’t have worked due to the state of my ankle. I’m now waiting to have all the metal work from various op over the years removed which isn't an easy op.
I’m telling you all of this beacuase I would hate for anyone to go through the same as what I have been through over the past 15yrs. Please make sure you get it properly checked out! Claire. Xx

Hi Jason,
A medial ankle sprain (on inside of ankle) is not as common as on outside ankle (lateral sprain). Lateral sprains are very common in sports injuries, and when people with unstable ankles 'roll' their ankle outwards.
I sustained a medial ankle sprain with a fracture-- it was a moderately severe sprain with swelling and discoloration.
Serious ankle sprains should be taken seriously. It sounds like your doctor doesn't deal with many ankle injuries and may not be your best bet to get the proper advice and care you need. I would recommend a practitioner with some expertise in that area.
If you can't walk on your ankle now you should probably use crutches have that foot non-weight bearing in a CAM boot (aka air boot) to protect your ligaments and tendons until inflammation and swelling subside.
