squishy furniture

Posted , 6 users are following.

I am 6 weeks LTHR tomorrow, and only vaguely instructed to follow 90 degree restrictions for 6 weeks when I left hospital, which I have followed. I have been doing fairly well, although having a new posterior pain at the base of the buttock and new groin pain, which I assumed was because I have stepped up the resistance exercises and doing more walking. So, whilst visiting relatives yesterday I totally forgot I have mostly been sitting on high chairs / dining chairs, and went straight for a squishy sofa as the height looked okay (I'm quite short anyway) Soft furnishings are definitely a no - no! As soon as I sat on it i was so uncomfortable I had to get up, and now have generalised pain through the hip, down the thigh etc. I don't think anything dramatic has happened, but wonder from other hippies how long we have to carry on sitting in high nursing home style rigid chairs? Do we ever get back to the point of normality or is this our new life now?

    Dear Jools

It does not go on for ever....honest! I'm 5.5 months post posterior THR and have not concerned myself with this restriction for months.

    Cheers

No, you'll slowly revert to 'normality' over the weeks and months ahead.

Jools, it will get better but I followed avoiding low seating for some time. the pain you have now is probably because the hip didn't like the position it was in, I'm 25 months post op and recently went to a day conference. The chairs were the ones they use for wedding ceremonies fairly low, not for all day sitting. My hip let me know it wasn't comfortable so i asked for a different chair at break time, was so much better. I still stick my leg out behind me when i bend forward to pick something up, its a habit my brain seems to not want to break lol.

Yep, I still do the leg back thing but mostly because I find it just more comfortable!

      Hi,

Do you think normal ish sofa sat on breeze blocks could work, sorry if this sounds a little out there 😃

If not what type of seating should one use for first couple of months etc.

      Stay safe

      Pete 😊

Anything that won't collapse will be fine. Concrete blocks because their rough surface will tend to stop the sofa from moving.

      Hi Pete,

?Actually you have just reminded me my mum had these raisers under her sofa when she was ill last year from the occupational Therapist. I know you can get them if you need them from the hospital. , or buy them online I inherited her high riser recliner for a shorter person, which is rock hard firm underneath you, but has been amazing for correct posture. I think it might be the 'squishy' nature of normal sofas, and because my legs weren't long enough to reach the edge of the cushion. I guess I will just have to be a bit more vigilant before I sit down. I think I genuinely forgot I'm not there yet!  I'm so looking forward to sitting on something a bit more relaxed. biggrin

      Hi Richard,

Many thanks for the reply, sounds like a trip to wickes in the morning. How long do you normally have to be careful on the sitting down thing.

      Stay safe

      Pete 😀

      Dear Pete

Like everything in this recovery it is different for everyone but I think the better your muscles have recovered if you had the posterior approach the less of a danger it is. I think I was no longer concerned after three months .

      Cheers, Richard

I had both hips done at the same time....my right hip often feels like electricity is shooting down my leg....when this happens due to the way I bend or stretch ...I get the the floor...straighten my legs and do a few low bridges. In a few minutes I am good to go!

    Hi Jools,

Sounds very familiar ... I found that chairs, couches and toilet seats were/are ridiculously low - and still are !

seriously !!!  I had my couch on blocks for a while and at some point decided to put it back to normal --- that felt awkward - toilet seat in restaurants or friends' homes same -

but you will get used to it again ---  your body will let you know ... 6 weeks is still early, darling -

ask for a cushion or something -

    big warm hug

    renee
