Stabbing pain in my right side. Is it ibs???

Posted , 6 users are following.

The pain started 2 days ago, I went to hospital yesterday they thought it could be my appendix, had blood tests and urine tests all came back clear, so was sent home and told if pain gets really bad to go back. The pain is still the same. I have taken buscopan this morning, but no relief yet, I do feel bloted and full of gas. I'm just wondering if it is ibs or is it something else?? I suffer with anxiety so getting a bit stressed as pain won't go away.

I went to hospital last year but with a left stabbing pain.  They put it down to a ?burst ovarian cyst as it wasnt there when they ultra-sounded me... this when all my IBS issues started.

Try to not get so stressed for I have noticed when I do you concerntrate more on your breathing and how you are pannicking etc and this must just put pressure around the rib area as technically you are starving yourself of breaths if you are stopping you breathing to listen to your heartrate.  Deep breathing doesnt do it for me as it only signifies the problem even more so I make sure I do something to keep it off my mind - TV, look on the PC, go for a walk, make a cuppa T...

I've  suffered with a stabbing pain in my lower right hand side for years and years. Have had all the usual fears of appendicitis and burst ovarian cysts, but nothing.  I was at the doctors so often at one point I was even wondering if they thought I was making it all up! But the pain was so real, and so sore it drove me barmy. I had 2 years of intermittent scans all negative, so eventually it was put down to ibs. I must admit, I do suffer from anxiety problems anyway, and when I get very stressed the ibs flares up terribly. I can't really find anything particular that helps me though, although colpermin seems to help a bit. I also suffer with terrible nausea when the pain is there also, and it's the nausea that I really can't cope with. So I end up not eating because of it. The whole thing makes me feel very poorly, and down. Sorry if this isn't a very positive answer for you, but I didn't think it was ibs either, still not really convinced, but I think I convince myself it's that now!!

    Hi Julia

I have exactly the same pain as you, I've been into hospital 3 times with it. All the relevant tests have ruled out appendicitis. I had these pains for 4 months n then I got rushed to hospital with peritonitis which is an infection in your abdomen. I had surgery to clean my insides up, now for 18 months I've suffered with the same pain still I've had more test to rule out colitis and crohns, and I have been diagnosed with post infective ibs, which includes violent vomiting, weight loss and server dehydration, and I can't eat anything that's hard to digest, I pretty much live on fluids now and I have to take amitriptaline just to cope with the pain.

I'm not saying all this to scare, you just need to be vigilant and question your doCtor vigorously. Have you had food poisoning or vomiting recently? As this can bring on ibs type symptoms.

No not been sick and don't feel sick, just this pain. I'm going to go to the drs tomorrow and see what she thinks, I seem to get it around the time my period is due so it could be ovarian cyst. Thanks for replying. Xx

Hi there, this was how my IBS started, I ended up going to A & E in a panic and after x ray they found my colon was impacted (constipated).  You need to go to doc and before IBS is confirmed they must rule out other things by carrying out as a minimum a gluten test and investigation such as a scan. In the meantime get yourself going to the toilet regular by taking something like fibrogel twice daily and for me I also had to eat prunes too! Keep taking IBS over the counter meds too. Good luck!
