Hello,

I have been operated for stapedectomy in my left ear 7days back.

after operation I was able to hear even tiny sound with operated left ear.

I can see some blood fluid coming out from left ear from the day I operated till date. specially when I try to sleep.

what I observes is from 6th day I am not able to hear from my left operates ear. is it because of blood fluid (some part tried up) has blocked my ear temparieily?

when I touch the operated left ear and from below neck I can feel sensation.

there is a pack in my ear which will be removed in 3 weeks time.

any help is appreciated.

    This is all normal.

I did the stapes surgery and my ear was blocked with blood for 1 month.

    Cheers

    Hey,

I had a stapedectomy a few years ago. I have otosclerosis and bad hearing loss and tinnitus, so really as bad as it gets tbh. I remember after the stapedectomy my ear was swollen, bleeding and packed and i couldn't really hear much from it at all for some time other than the raging tinnitus . The doctor did stick a metal fork device on my forehead and twanged it after my surgery, which allowed me to feel my right ear vibrating to assure me the operation had been a success.

When I was recovering at home I got worried too about the lack of sound. So to make sure that I hadn't gone deaf I would occasionally play music from my phone quite loudly and hold the speaker against my packed ear to hear muffled sounds come through, if only faintly. This helped reassure me a bit. You could try that. I remember I did spend the first few weeks constantly worrying that I couldn't hear much through that ear. That was just my own personal experience of course and if you hear absolutely nothing then it could be as you say, blood and packing is just blocking the canal to the degree you can't hear anything. It does take some time for all the swelling and stuff to settle down before you can truly see how much benefit you have gained from it.

I do hope your operation turns out to be a success. Some people have almost full restoration of hearing. My operation did improve my situation but it was not as impactful as I hoped it to be and I still require a hearing aid, but wait and see how yours goes. There's a lot of variables that go in to it and if you have otosclerosis like me then it should at least prevent it getting any worse.

Remember that a stapedectomy has a 95% success rate on average, so the odds are in your favour.

    All the best,

    James
