Has anyone, who have had staples and once they had been removed had to have dressing back on and still have a slight bleed seen on the dressing??

I have spoken to 111 and am waiting for a doctor to call me back.

Hi I didnt have staples but my wound dressing was meant to stay in place until I went back to hospital for my check up. It became quite nasty and I had to have it changed a couple of times, when I went back to the hospital it still looked quite nasty and was leaking through the dressing so they put a drain on, it was on for a few days and had it not stopped I was going to have to go back into hospital and have it opened up and washed out for fear of infection, fortunately the drain worked, I hope you can get it sorted please take care Regards Cyndey

Hi. They usually take alternate staples and sutures out first then the next day take out what's left - just to check its healed properly ( or that's what I'd always done for over 35 yrs as a nurse ). If 111 don't get back to you for ages I'd lift the dressing slightly to see what's happening. Could just be big of blood from where the prongs of the staples were as opposed to anything else. If you're still concerning tomorrow I'd ring your GP and ask to see their practice nurse.

Id also keep a check on your temperature if you can - will give a hint if it's just more more than a slight bleed from the staples or infection etc.

Had mine all out at once Julie after two weeks, district nurse came to the house to take them out. I also had a shower the day after hip op in the hospital. I do not think anyone has them out bit by bit now.

I can understand the shower as wounds are closed in layers with only the outer layer needing sutures /staples removed if not dissolveable sutures used. But suppose these days the nhs can't justify sending a DN out twice. Shame tho cos it gave the wound another 24 hrs to settle. I've not yet had my op but the info from the hospital is dissolveable sutures .

    Hello PerinaAnn,

I had staples all along my incision, a lot, and they were removed all at once in the surgeon's office about 10 days after. A new dressing was put on and I did have a little bleeding from the removal for a day or 2 after. This is normal. What you don't want is colored discharge, green, yellow, redness at the wound, anything that might indicate an infection. I think I was told to not soak in a bath for several days but I could shower and I did put a dressing back on for a few days to keep my clothes clean and to keep from rubbing cloth on the wound. The incision felt much better once those staples were out since the incision could relax and not pull every time I moved. I'm now 11 months after and the scar e with osme tenderness in the middle section. I have read recently that Bio Oil rubbed on the scar makes it less visible and less sensitive so I'll try that and see what happens. Good luck.

111 got back to me, she was happy with the way we described it, that was ok. But to make another appointment with practice nurse tomorrow, which I was going to do anyway. But to call back if anything was to change. I am also back on the ward for physio tomorrow so may ask them at the same time. Physio asked last week how everything was including wound area. And Ive just had a walk and it felt fine.

    Thanks for your replies.

I had no problems after having my staples removed, and I have a rare blood clotting disorder which stops the blood from clotting as fast as it should. Don't forget this is a big incision, but it should not bleed much after having the staples out - is it the scar itself or the staple holes that is leaking?

Hope the 111 doctor can sort it out for you.

Yes. Had some spotting on my dressing, but my scar has healed beautifully and not marks to be seen where the staples were. I get a stinging sensation a couple of cms away from the scar and it feels like the upper layer of skin was pulled back and another incision was made in that area. I rub the whole area with bio oil and that helps calm it down.

Saw same practice nurse as on Friday this morning and she was happy as no infection but one staple point was leaking slightly so another dressing was put back on. But I feel better about it now.
