staples out, exercises to transition to a cane ( stick)

PT took out my staples today and put on steri stripes, glad I got those staples out.  They have me doing standing excersises at the sink for balancing to get me redy to transition to a cane next week.  I am 11 days post op.  I haven't said anything as I know most people have a tough time of sleeping on their backs, can you believe the day of my surgery the nurse asked" would you like to sleep on your side?" I looked at her like she had gone mad.  I was told as long as I had a pillow between my legs I could sleep on non surgical side.  The therapist asked me today f I wanted to stay on my side and take a nap when she was done with staple removal. I will stick to my back.

I guess I am making progress I o know sometimes I sure put a lot of weight on the walker. Can't imagine using a cane.

Annette

I bet it's a relief to get the staples out! I luckily had glue but I can imagine staples to pinch & be uncomfortable.

Take it steady and have a great weekend. Xx

We have a sleep number bed, I had a preious surgery that required me to learn to sleep on my back so for the most part I have been doing that the last 8 years. ( plus I heard you will keep wrinkles off your face) lol

Slow as she goes, yup that's me! thank you Kate xox

I remember when I was 11 days post op. Time flies and boy do things change from where you are now till you heal. I am now almost 3 months post op and I feel great! I've been walking without any assistance since 30 days after surgery. But now I don't feel the difference between my left replacement and the good hip on the right. It really does start to get better. First step is actually getting the surgery. Second is getting staples out. Third is walking without assistance and the next step I'm still finding out on my own.

Oh, by the way, I don't know if you know the brand or model of your implant but mine is the Stryker Dual Mobility Hip model I have ZERO complaints so far. ZERO - I am a 46 year old male that had a total hip replacement in June of this year.

    Good luck and stay positive!

      Thank you Ricky,

My hip is a Depuy, hoping to just keep moving forward, I hope this staple removal thing is a marker of the next phase! Thank you and good luck to you!

    dear annette,

so interesting that your staples were removed by your PT ... Mine were removed by Surgeon's assistant as outpatient - they stopped having GP's removing staples because of who knows?  I am in Holland and this was a regional hospital - according to PA it was part of the health insurance policy ---

anyway darling, that is really good news ---

I had a 4 wheeled walker instead of crutches (living alone and they thought the walker was safer) and also leaned on it too much (when nobody was watching) -

try to put your body as close as possible to walker and barely touch handles - stand up straight and take full steps -

listen to your body and start slowly - I had my own complicated routine in the beginning - took my walker outside and cane with me - then walked with cane, keeping an eye on walker --- I had to do it this way as there was nobody with me -

as they say, one step-one day at a time !!

    big warm hug

      Thanks Renee,

I too have the 4 wheel walker, my carpet is rather think, so I thought it would be easier to get around with 4 wheels, glad I did. The therapist said this week the therapist will probably have me walk along the kitchen counter using the cane on my good side ( non surgical leg side) and then eventually have me walk odd the counter area with using the cane YIKES!!  I hope I will use less weight on the walker, I am trying. I find doing the standing exerises when I stand on only the surgical leg I lean with my arms qwith quite a bit of weight.  i guess it's all a work in progress.  thank you Renee xoxox
