Starburst around all lights at night after cataract surgery

I am a 35 year old female who has a family history of cataracts on both sides of family at a young age. I had cataract surgery in June and July of 2015 on both eyes and had a monofocal lens implanted in both eyes. I never really had the feeling that my vision was better after either of these surgeries. The doctor continued to dismiss my concerns and suggested the laser YAG surgery for my left eye. I delayed this because I as so unhappy and was driving with halos at night after the surgeries. In April of 2016, I moved forward with the YAG surgery hoping this as the answer but this made everything worse. I can no longer drive at night due to starburst and and am left struggling to get home before the sun goes down every night from worksad I have been to four other eye doctors in my area and all of their diagnosis disagree. The last Doctor I saw today sent me for a $200 hard contact trial to rule out it being the astigmatism causing the problem but sadly I can't afford this. She also discuss eye drops to constrict my pupil but these all have their own risk. She will not let me move forward without the contact trial first which I have told her that contacts had never work well with me in the past due my constant allergies. So I am left fighting like so many other for answers that seems no likely to come with out divine intervention. So I pray every night for me and so many others out there like me for answers.

So sorry to hear your having vision issues at such a young age. I am 56 and just discovered I had cataracts. Have had to wear glasses since first year in school. Was getting bad grades in everything, at first it eas thought I was not intelligent till it was discovered i just couldn't see. Today I don't need glasses to see far just for reading. I had implants installed. Then the laser was used to remove a film which was when I started to see starbuts in right eye. Read a number of posts here then found a site were an optomologist posted about starburts. Read about an experiment were test subjects wore glasses that inverted everything and over a period of time the test subjects started to see everything right side up, the brain adjusted to the inverted vision. The test subjects stopped wearing the glasses and everything was then inverted, after a period of time the brain readjusted and the the test subjects started seeing everything right side up again. Since reading these posts I have noticed if I consciously not think about the Starburst they disappear but then thats me. Today the Starburst come ane go depending on my mindset. I know it sounds strange but it's what I am experiencing. I remember living across the street from a railroad track at first I would wake up when the train came through after a while I stopped doing that because my mind would block it out. Hope the best for everyone reading this, I know it's a difficulty but hopefully it helps. As far as seeing during day its great to be able to see distance without glasses. I was getting sores on my nose were the sun light was being amplified which would bleed all the time causing fear of skin cancer on my face, no longer an issue. Can live with the starbursts in right eye if it means not having to deal with the little holes in the sides of my nose from having to wear those bifocals.

Hi Carrie-Totally understand and share your frustration! Unfortunately, that's all I can do😢 I'm pretty much in the same boat and haven't found an answer.

When the surgeon told me that given the slight degree of cataracts, I could easily wait probably 5 years before surgery, I should have hit the floor running. Instead, I waited until he said there was no reason to wait until they got bad, and I signed right up.

If the goal of surgery was to provide me with worse vision coming out, than I had going in, they succeeded. When the surgeon tells me that I got what I asked for, I'd seriously like to punch him! I know something went wrong, but it's more than a little intimidating to debate this.

I wish you all the best. Nothing is worse than feeling as though you're being manipulated by a doctor.

Hello, I had surgery a year ago followed by the Yag laser surgery in both eyes. They keep telling me I have dry eye syndrome which popped up out of the blue a couple of months before I went in for a consultation to have cataract surgery. I told the doctor the worst problem is the glare while driving at night. His response: you had lasix surgery so it's from the scars from that surgery. I thought he was nuts because I had that surgery 12 yrs ago & never had a problem. Here we are a year later & like you I can't drive at night especially after working on the computer all day. Now with daylight savings time it's a race to get home before dark. The other night I almost ran up the curb because of the glare of the oncoming cars in the neighborhood. I am 62 so I can't retire because I can't get Medicare yet.

I can't see my phone to text, never could. Can't use it to google or anything like that. I have a tablet but 30 min is about all I can take because of the glare.

I sympathaze tremendously, thoughts & prayers to everyone for your safety & mine. I will be alone for the holidays this year since I can't drive at night anymore.

Hi, 4Carrie, I wanted you to know that i am praying for you. i hope your situation is better. i have had a monofocal lens in my left eye (cateract surgery) and see shimmering in the side of that eue. night driving with the star bursts was awful yesterday, as I was trying to drive to church in the evening. I had surgery on the 9th Oct so its 5 weeks ago. I'm so scared too because I need to work and drive etc like you. I was wondering though, might glasses help? I'm certainly going to see my optometrist and get some glasses made up! I'm planning to have mini monovision. my second surgery is tomorrow. If you get this please pray! Thank you 😊 I do hope you are OK and all those out there with issues affecting them.
