People around me tell me not to take medication and change my mind set. I've felt depressed for years ( but done nothing) then recently had very bad thoughts about myself and realised putting on a brave face for others making out I can cope makes it worse.

the 1st thing is they are not you. You are in control not people around you.
2 nd. YOU do what YOU think will help.. eg if taking medication helps go for it. Counselling. Therapy. What ever helps YOU.YOU only need to please YOUR self Dont please others Im learning that the hard way. I have been on sertraline for 3 weeks and im feel a little benefit, but have a long way to go.
Please dont worry about what others think around you (easy said then done i know i know) but try and put YOUR self 1st.

You are very wise and brave to have come to this life changing query. Having had to face such choices for myself in my life where, for me it was my family, who felt the need to make my life choices for me. And who kept their thumb on the pulse of who they defined that I should be.
Depression is very serious and I understand those scary dark thoughts. What do you want for yourself Sharon? What do YOU need and want? Answer that question and toss out EVERYTHING that goes against what you know is best and want for YOURSELF. Period. Simple as that.
It is only you who lives inside your body. I pray the best for you!

I'm in exactly the same place, having suffered for a good 10 years with depression. Only recently have I come to realise this isn't a phase (yes it's taken 10 years to arrive at that place!) Whilst I have had therapy along the way and still do today, I've come to the conclusion I need to start taking my anti-depressants. I was perscribed some back in Sept last year but thought I could get through. Not so, even with weekly therapy.
I have family who are very old fashioned in their views, so the whole "just be grateful for what you have" comments start to fly around. Very unhelpful but they're a big part of why I feel the way I do today.
Listen to what is right for you. You're not being selfish, self centred or a martyr. You've got an illness and you need to try and either cure it or learn to live with it. Bad days are just that, one off periods. If it's sustained you need to take action and get yourself on to a level playing field.
Hope you find some solace and a way forward that helps you.
