Very confused on what to do? My Doctors assitant psychiatrist started me on Wellbutrin 150mg on Feb 18,2016 for depression & to stop smoking. Also I was taking Clonazepam 1mg for anxiety. My smoking got worse because of some issues in my life,I was smoking 1pk a day & now 4-6 over that. I saw her this Monday & she increased the dosage to 300mg of Wellbutrin & took me off the Clonazepam & put me on xanax 1mg & also Gabapentin 100mg, she told me the Gabapentin was for LOW MOOD.

I didn't get the xanax or the Gabapentin filled yet because what I have read the Gabapentin is for seizures & pain...didn't read anywhere for LOW MOOD. If anyone has used wellbutrin or any of the other meds please let me know??? I really want to stop smoking & was told need 300mg of wellbutrin & would take 3-4 months to work. Not sure if i should take the Gabapentin because I don't have seizures or other pain.

Is there a particular reason for you to give up smoking right now!? Obviously it is a very unhealthy habit- we should all give up- but most doctors would say to give up during a time of stress or difficulty in life is just asking for failure, better to try and stop when you are more settled, less upset.

I have no idea why the doc has prescribed Gabapentin. It is not an antidpressant, or a mood enhancer.

Thanks Lucy, I googled Gabapentin & it said nothing about helping with (low moods) I really don't know why she perscribed this maybe because I am taking a higher dose of Wellbutrin which could cause seizures? Because Gabapentin is also taken for seizures....not sure!!

    Hi linda

im guessing the doctor prescribed the gabapentin to counteract the possibility of seizures from the higher dose of wellbutrin .. however im on 900mg of gabapentin daily for thorasic nerve pain and allthough im happy thats not a effect of the gabapentin ( as im a happy go lucky guy anyway )

another problem the doctor hasnt considered is the xanax .. its great for anxiety but if you tried to come off them even after just 3 to 4 months your anxiety would be ten times worse .... and 1mg would soon become ineffective meaning a higher dose would be needed for the same effect

as a rule a anti-deppressant such as prozac would be a better option ... this takes time to work ( around 30 days ) but when it does it would help with both the anxiety and also help you stop smoking ..

as with all medications they take time to work and many people either dont like the side effects during this stage or are simply not happy ( or cant wait for the desired effects )

im a firm beleiver in non medication cures .. counselling is king ... again it wont work on the first visit but in combination with the correct meds it can be succesful

i was taking many meds for a thorasic herniated disc however im now on just gabapentin and physio and this seems to be the perfect combination, however its took 18 months to find this combo ......

stick at it and find your perfect combination .. it wont happen overnight but when it does you will know it

good luck linda and i wish you all the best

I started wellbutrin to stop smoking & for depression, 150mg & then increased to 300mg which i started April 1. I am smoking more than I did before starting the meds & this is crazy, grant u I am under tramenous stress over housing problems & also lost a good friend of 16 years over something stupid... she didn't pass away. I will be picking up Xanax 1mg on April 20 after my perscipstion plan will let me. I have been on Clonazepam 1mg which didn't really help. In the past xanax 1mg helped me cope. Hope it helps this time around. I really don't think Wellbutrin is helping & after I was on it for over a month or more my physicist informed me it could cause anxiety....great why put me on it to begin with if that is true? If Wellbutrin is not going to help with cutting down my smoking, I will ask to be put on prozac.
