starting on sertraline

So glad i found this site! I am 39 years old and have been suffering from depression after the traumatic birth of my daughter 8 years ago. Since then i have been on 20mg of fluoxetine per day & it worked brilliantly, seen me through the birth of my son 4 years ago. Around 3 months ago i started to feel really anxious & angry all the time & both my husband & mum suggested i go to dr. I now feel like my head is going to explode, i feel i am constantly shouting at my kids for no reason at all & this just kills me as my kids & husband are my world & dont deserve this. Today i have started on 25mg of sertraline & been told to increase to 50mg on a weeks time. I so hope these work, am a bit concerned about all the side effects mentioned but just want to get back to a fun relaxed mummy 😀. Any other mums out there been in this position?

I have found Sertraline very helpful. The only side effects I have experienced are weight gain and feeling a little distant at times. Good luck!

I've been on Sertraline since having my first baby 18 months ago. Started on 50mg and increased to 100mg when my father in law died at Christmas and I've found I'm at at my best on this dose.  I did struggle with the initial side effects: very anxious, insomnia and intrusive thoughts but it was worth riding out as I am now feeling "normal" if there's such a thing.  Hope it works out for you, just give it chance.

Thank you Amelia. Fingers crossed it works for me too, as you say, just want to feel 'normal' again!

Hi Amelia , I've been on this med since last September 2015 was on 50 and increased to 100since last January this year . This med helped me and caned my deppression felt good in it . But last week I've had a high anixity and I feel scared out of nothing with thoughts also about this scariness feeling . I'm used to be a happy mom but now I can't enjoy my kids or my happy moments too , do you have any advice to me ? I know I should go to my physician dr but he is away these days and will return soon , if any advice I would appreciate so much . Or if you had something similar or what ??? ☹️

I just want to enjoy my life again .

Hi dodo.  I have had bouts of anxiety out of the blue while on 50mg but since I've been on 100mg I feel more even, maybe even slightly numb, I find it impossible to cry but I prefer feeling like this rather than constantly on edge and I can enjoy being a mom.  My Dr did prescribe me Propanalol (beta blocka) for particularly anxious times but I'm trying to manage without.  What I have found that helps is hypnotherapy, I listen to an app, worth a try it's really helped me.  Good luck

Hi Tracy I can tell you from my experience on this med for 6 months it helped a lot to cope and deal with everyday life and that is great , just stick to . It took me from 6 to 8 weeks to feel coping and good but I can't tell u that I had myself back yet . I hope we all can one day . All the best of luck to you and keep going dear .
