Starting Sertraline

Hi all, very new to all of this having only recently been diagnosed today. I have been out on 4 weeks of Sertraline 50mg. Now I’ve never been much of a believer in anti-depressants but I’ve come to a point in my life where I have hit the wall and it’s started affecting my home life and my work. Something needed to happen. I’ve a telephone assessment with a counsellor next week. I just want this constant pounding of my heart, short breathes and horrible feelings gone. It’s causing a rift in my marriage. I was given no advice other than they may make me worse and even have suicidal thoughts. I took one today and wow! I couldn’t move. My feet went numb, I was sweating, couldn’t speak, uncontrollable breathing and even thinking my toes were moving like a ripple when they weren’t! How long does these side effects tend to last for? Rob

Hi rob I’ve just seen your post now, I’m sorry you are feeling this way I’ve been there before and it’s the worse feeling ever!! I want you to know that it does get better and you WILL get better just stick with it and you will get there, these meds do make you worse before you get better and my god I had every single side effect you could image it was horrible! But I promise it does get better it just takes time, I was very lucky I’ve got a very supportive partner who helped me through it day by day, people will never understand what you are going through unless they’ve had it themself, I wish you all the best rob 😊

Thanks Leo. Couple of days in now and have started taking them a bit later, nearer when I go to bed. I get terrible morning anxiety from it instead now! I will stick with it and hope that one day I can finally feel a bit more human!

Rob hang in there they do pass st first I thought I was on speed couldn’t stop moving or relax but that all the adrenaline and anxiety in you plus heart beating fast doesnt help I recently got put on a better block to slow my heart rate because that can cause a lot more adrenaline and anxiety plus I’m on Valium to calm me for the time being till my tablets reboot it’s judt helps take the pressure off and I find once it starts to kick in I’m not wanting the Valium and take less throughout the day that when I know there is an improvement so maybe ask your doctor for one of these or something in the mean time to help you ease a bit

    Hope this helps

I hate this nightmare and want it all to go away

      Hi Emma,

I defiantly feel similar. I can’t sit still! Hot flushes too but taking them before bed seems to of eased the brunt of it whilst my body is getting used to it. I’ve had to quit coffee too 😞

I’ve got some rescue remedy I use when it’s gets too tough and started using a meditation app which worked for me this morning.

I’ll stick with it and thanks for the support!
