Startup Pain/Pain When Standing Up

Posted , 8 users are following.

My first THR was 14 months ago and was still experiencing startup pain. I tried a stretch that stretches the quad and I’ve had great results as far as my startup pain diminishing. It feels so great! I feel it just a tad but nothing near to what I was feeling.

I haven’t seen anything on here where someone mentions this. Maybe some of you already do it. I lay on my belly and I have my husband bring one of my feet up towards the buttocks as far as I can to get a good stretch. Tuck in ur hips to avoid the swayed back. It’s different than pulling your foot up behind you while standing.

Hopefully it can work for some of you if you’ve never tried this before.

I have been wondering what are the best ways to stretch. I really feel that tight muscles are the cause of my startup pain. Shouldn't this be something that is addressed with anyone having hip replacement - good stretches? I will give this a try. How many times a day are you doing this and do you just hold the stretch one time?

Hi Anne, I do it at least twice a day and I would prefer doing it 3 times a day but as my husband is at work and I need his help. I am 11 weeks post op on my other hip’s THR and have a pinched nerve on that side. Today was my 4th or 5th day and so happy I’m getting some relief

I do it 3 times on each leg. I can tell on the upper thigh that it’s not hard to the touch like before. I’m just hoping that if I ever stop doing these it doesn’t come back again. Good luck and hope you it works for you.

And yes I agree we should be told about all stretches that could benefit us. I actually looked it up on YouTube on how to stretch the quads. Always done it standing up and knew I needed more of a stretch.

I tried this for the first time this morning. Boy is that muscle ever tight! I will continue with this stretch as I'm sure it must help. I'm so glad to have something to try. I just want to be able to walk naturally without always being conscious of the fact that I have had hip replacement surgery!

Yes I noticed how tight it was. And I agree about getting up and having to wait a bit to start walking. I’m not that old yet.

    Hello Dsilk05

I am always so releived when I hear other people have start up pain, and know it isnt just me. Not that I am releived to know you are suffering, and for so long! I had my right hip replaced 7 months ago, in June and still have the start up pain, interestingly my physio has given me same stretch, though I lie on my side and husband pulls it up, I am going to try lying on my stomach and see if it might just make any difference. He says it takes a lot of strenght to hold as it pulls back against him strongly.  As a comparision the other side when he does it doesnt, so it is definately very tight on that side.  I had a long standing adolescent hip problem that was pinned but always had a leg discrepancy though I wasnt particulary aware of it until last few years ago when it got very bad and it became very obvious. so a lot of stretching now that both are the same length.felt odd to start with when was shorter since I was 12. I just keep hoping that given once I get going the pain goes and it is amazing to be pain free and means then that the actual joint is ok. I see consultance again on the 9th March.  Good tip! we always need them.  I hope your start up pain goes soon. take care

Thank you I’m hoping it continues to work. Hope it works better for you in that position.

Well done there on finding a 'new' approach to curing the all-too-familiar "getting up out of a chair" pains.

That's the beauty of this forum, the shared knowledge.

    Best wishes

I had it for about 4 weeks after a posterior THR.  It will get better. Keep walking  and therapy
