Thew debate is far from settled, and even if the number of people suffering from Statin side effects is small, for those affected it is serious. Statin use must be carefully monitored, and not just given routinely in a 'fire and forget' way.

The problem with side effects from statins is well known and documented. I was tried on three different statins and all caused severe muscular pain (shoulder and hips, left side only) - came on within a week and took 2 weeks to go after stopping the statins. I have been persuaded to try again and am on 40mg Simvastatin. What I have done this time is to ignore the instructions about taking it last thing at night and take it, instead, with my evening meal. My cholesterol has fallen from 6.5 to 3,5 and I have had no side effects. My mother, who is 82, was also put on statins and had similar side effects so these may be genetically linked.

I really hope you've found away of preventing side effects by taking at different time. I doubt very much that yours and your mothers side effect issue is generically linked, It's more likely to be the statins affecting both of you nothing about genes.

I personally wouldn't go near a statin after suffering terrible side effects, also after lots of research I've come to realise we need cholesterol and the whole lowering cholesterol to prevent heart disease is a big fat lie.

fingers crossed you remain side effect free :-)

Thanks for your response. I tend to agree about statins and cholesterol and I read many articles that question the hysteria about cholesterol. I tell my mother that, at 82, it's a bit late to worry about and not worth the siade effects. As I have type 2 diabetes and fatty liver I am heavily pressurised to take the statins but am keeping verything under review. I take part in experiments and trials for diabetes and, about to start a new one; becuase of this I had a complete medical examination and full blood profile by the researchers;  I had been feeling really exhausted and the blood profile found my Haemoglobin level to be very low; as I had never had problems with this before I wonder if it is another side effect of restarting the statins; on referal to my GP I am now on iron sulphate to try to bring it back up. I have always tried to avoid any form of medications because I think you can get on a slippery slope of ever more tablets each one trying to treat side-effects from a previous one.

As I have already stated elsewhere

Personally I think statins will prove to be the biggest and most damaging medical scandal in history. Even bigger than the Vioxx scandal that killed over 60 000 people and cost Merck $4.85 billion in damages and an additional $950 million to end a US government investigation of the drug’s marketing practices plus an additional $23 million last year.

Big pharma influences are leaning on the British Medical Journal (BMJ) and the researchers that published a damning report on statins to get it withdrawn. (possibly threatening to do a “Wakefield” type stitch up on them).

The trouble with the modern allopathic medical system is that it is more interested in turning off the smoke alarms than putting out the fires. (a pill to mask every ill, instead of prescribing a healthy diet and life style {not the currently suggested high carb / sugar and low fat one though} )
