Statins

I was prescribed Atorvastatin but had some muscle pain with it. It was swapped for Simvastatin but then started with dystonic contractions of muscles. On top of that I became fatigued, unable to focus. I've been taken off the medication and the symptoms should decrease as it leaves my system. I was on a low dose, 20mg a day and wondered if others had experienced similar problems on a low dosage.

I have been on 40mg for years and haven't had those symptoms.

My husband has been on Simvastatin for years, like yourself, no muscle problems. The GP had said to me the side effects I had were unusual at a low dose. Most people seem to tolerate statins reasonably well. Not me unfortunately.

Some people can use diet instead of medications, but not me, mine runs in the family.

My dad had atherosclerosis and looks like I take after him. I can't tolerate Statins plus I have a collagen vascular condition, so have other meds to control right sided atrial block. My sister in law has no problems with cholesterol levels but had two heart attacks just after she turned 50. On her mother's side there's a history of heart disease, mind you mother in law is almost 90 despite having ischemic heart disease.

Yes I have and th drug was discontinued. All statins have this effect so I am controlled with diet.

Hope you are doing okay Harriet. The Rheumatologist I see regularly has added a note to my medical records about statins. I have a collagen vascular condition so his advice was to avoid Statins altogether and continue using diet to control.

      Hi

Did your rheumatologist advise you on which meds to avoid?

In my case they suggested avoiding Statins altogether. He said in some cases swapping brands can reduce symptoms, Atoravastatin seems to cause fewer muscle related side effects than Simvastatin. As I already have problems with soft tissue damage it's balancing risk. I'd been reluctant to take Statins.

Mind my asking how your soft tissue occurred or was due to?

No problem Harriet. I've got Lupus (SLE). I was misdiagnosed for a long time so didn't get the appropriate treatment until 2years ago. It's an autoimmune condition so my immune system attacks my body. Unfortunately it's left me with wide spread damage to soft tissue. The statins were making it worse in my case. Lupus was in the news recently, Selena Gomez having had a kidney transplant, major organs can be affected too.
