Statins... Atorvastatin

Hi all, I've joined to see if i can get some answers for my 65 yr old dad...He has been on Atorvastatin 40 mg for the last 6 yrs...He has experienced shoulder pain for almost all this time, but during the last 3 months he's gone from a fit man to someone that can barely walk....He is experiencing pain in his legs, back and arms, He's not sleeping properly. He says that the pain is like a stiffness. He also lost his appetite although this has started to improve. He has lost muscle tone and weight  which has left him with sagging skin.  He's seen a new doctor who has done a vast amount of bloods and nothing points to anything sinister. The doctor has taken him off the statins and told him to buy co-enzyme Q10. He has seen a specialist doctor who has done one final blood test for fibromyalgia that was over 3 weeks ago and we haven't heard anything back so we are presuming this has come back normal...I just wanted to know if anyone has experienced something similar. TIA.

    I have experienced severe muscle pain. It has been 2 1/2 months since I stopped using it and only now am I returning to normal. It can take many long months to recover. Make sure the CoQ10 dose is high enough. I've been on the ubiqionol version. And also add in garlic pills.

      Hi Tani007, Did you experience weight loss and sagging skin??.. This new doctor seems to think dad has  depression and anxiety as well so has prescribed him an low dose antidepressant. He also said the antidepressant should help with the pain.

      No, I can't say that I experienced either. Be very careful with the antidepressant! Those have a host of issues on their own! And, if he ever tries to get off them, doctor's do not know how to wean correctly. It must be done super slow without skipping days and putting your brain on a rollercoaster.

    Hi, please get your dad to take CoQ10, magnesium and Vit D asap. Ideally he should swap out the statins for a Mediterranean style diet. Cholesterol, if that's the reason he was/is on statins is not the enemy. Those with high cholesterol love longer, happier lives.

    I'm 65 too. when i was 62 i had terrible chronic pain. I was missing one thing from my diet, according to the USDA recommended diet, i was missing moderate alcohol! I thought alcohol was bad, i had been duped. Too much is bad, sure. But i didn't get any for 30 years! I don't like the taste, but i forced myself to drink a tiny bit of wine, a half a glass a day.

    No more chronic pain for 3 years, and i can drive my 61 with manual steering!

    So check his diet.

    and statins reduce the fuel for the adrenal glands. i don't take any as i feel much better with higher numbers (more fuel)

    As your dad was taking Atorvastatin for 6 years and the symptoms you describe have only come about in the past 3 months it seems unlikely taking the statin was the cause of his problems. How long has he been off them and did this have any immediate effect?

    Waht was he originally put on the Atorvastatin for?

    Coenzyme Q10 is a supplement not medicine, like Garlic Pills, Magnesium and Vitamin D.

    Go back to your doctor and tell him about the problems, you can always ask your GP for a referral to a consultant in the specialism related to the original problem. https://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/AboutNHSservices/doctors/Pages/gp-referrals.aspx ;

    There should be no reason he won't get referred, particularly if you are prepared to be assertive about it.

    Nat, my dad started developing those exact same symptoms after 2 years of taking statin drugs. Like your dad he was getting saggy skin, foggy brain could barely walk had a lot of pain on his leg, arm, back but the worst pain was on the back of his neck. Since going off the statin drugs it's taken him six months to practically get rid of all the pain. My dad is now on Co q-10 he takes like 200 mg he's also taking garlic and magnesium and vitamin D and he's doing a lot better in fact his brain fog is gone his pain is gone his neck pain is gone his arm and his leg pains are all gone in fact he's a hundred percent back to normal where before he was becoming very depressed, with a very foggy brain and yes, his skin turned saggy. I would say your dad is experiencing the exact same symptoms because those are the symptoms that are associated with taking statin drugs. So happy my dad's mood has returned to normal yet, I don't think doctors know that it affects moods. Get your dad off the antidepressants it can make things worse.
