Stem cell treatment.

Posted , 7 users are following.

I was out with friends last night several have knee issues. One who had been told he needed a TKR chose another path and went to Melbourne, Australia for stem cell treatment of the knee joint. Cells were taken from his stomach and applied to the sanded back knee joint.

Has anyone had this treatment or have any insight ?

Cheers,

Jenni.

A couple of years ago after my second arthroscopy and before my tkr I discussed stem cell injections with my ortho. He told me they are very expensive about 3k an injection (at that time).they are given in a series of 3 and Insurance would not pay for it given its experimental nature . Also that there was only a 50/50 chance they would work. He basically advised against it for the above reasons at least in my case.

Therefore i didnt give stem cell injections any more thought.

Research carefully if you decide you want to do this.  I am in the US and the NIH and other agencies are finding that most of the clinics don't always get stem cells when they do the injection.   The other thing I read is that it works best if you have cartilage in your knee and are not bone on bone.   But all of that is really not backed up by science.

Stem cells is definitely an exciting prospect for the future but it is very early days to be available to the masses. The son of a friend of mine is doing stem cell research, very clever lad and he has managed to grow tissue. Just think in the future they might be able to grow a full working knee and transplant it. I'm hoping that when my knee replacement wears out medical science may have progressed some what X

    Hi there,

There is a new Regenexx clinic in the uk. I have an appointment this month for my chondromalacia that just won’t settle down. Could be worth a look. When we’re desperate to get back to health it’s crazy to think what lengths we will go to!
