Stent removal. Pain in the other kidney. Stones

Hello All this is my first post on here. Just after a bit of advice as google brings up nothing.

To cut a long boring story short i had 3 6mm stones in left kidney and 1 3mm in the right. The one in the right was removed by ureteroscope and laser (no stent needed as it was nearly in bladder and very small).

A stent was fitted left side as to my left ureter as it was too small to advance the ureteroscope, so ureter needed to “dilate” around the stent.

Those stone removed 4 weeks later from the left kindey and new stent in place for a further 3 weeks.

All ok. Stent was horrible and have spent the whole time on tramadol and bladder spasm tablets for the pain but no other problems.

The stent was removed today in a outpatient cystoscopy app. Pain has been ok(ish) keeping ontop of my painkillers though and urine seems to be "as expected" BUT my RIGHT kidney is the one with all the main pain right now???? The stent was removed from my left though. Why would the right one be the really sore? I have had no troubles with right kidney at all since stone went just under 2 months ago.

Has anyone had somthing done to one kidney and the other has hurt?

Drinking lots of water.

28 year old female.

Hope someone may be able to shed some light.

Many thanks for reading.

    Hi Meg,

My only opinion is that perhaps you had another stone lodged up in your right kidney and perhaps has started to move.  I cant see why you would have soreness on that side. My scan showed that I have several small ones lodged in my kidney which they say is pretty common,  they left those alone and only blasted the large ones.

I recently had a 4mm stone in the right kidney and 5mm stone in the left kidney, I passed the 4mm stone on the right side 3 days before surgery and no longer felt any pain. it is possible that the doctor put the scope up to your kidney on the right side during the procedure to remove the stones on the left. As small stones do not show up on imaging.

In my case, I had stents placed in both left/right sides and did not need to take any pain meds at all after they were removed.

You could also have an UTI which your primary care doctor can run a urine test to deturmine. if your still having pain several days after the stents have been removed. Advise your urologist whom most likely will do an ultrasound

My left had a lot of blockage and the right started hurting. Doctors said it was doing more work because my left couldnt funcion correctly. But a noticably different type or pain and soarness.

Thanks all for your reply. I'm still getting pain in both kindeys a whole month later. My doctor said it can take up to 8 weeks to heal. But I had no stent in left so shouldnt need to heal. And it's not having to work any harder now. I think they missed some stones. (2 did go "missing" they think I passed them. I didn't I can a sure you. I didnt pass a 6mm stone without feeling it. When I felt the pasing of a 2mm one before).

I have an appointment with the urologist at the hospital in about 6 weeks time so will tell/ask them for a scan if they are not planning on doing one. Nhs love it when you ask for stuff :-/ :-/ haha.
