Steppers

Does anyone know if it is safe to use a mini stepper (it has a half rotation twist) after tkr - I am 6 weeks post op and desperately need to strengthen my quads?

Check with a professional. Anything that twists is subject to suspect. Generally speaking, most people I've been around, including my doc says nothing like running a vac or like type excercise. Last time I went through this he allowed me to hit chip shots in the back yard with my short irons but nothing with any kind of turn till 16 weeks.

Hi there Carol.  I have no idea whether you should use the "stepper" you describe but the word "twist" is somewhat worrying!  My physio suggested using a small portable cycle/pedal machine that can be used whilst sitting in a chair until such time as a large proper gym type static bike can be used.  It's working wonders for my quads when combined with my thrice daily leg raises.  When in doubt ask a professional Carol because it would be a tragedy to undo all your hard work up to this point!

Hi! I was definitely told to do no twisting eg no vacuuming, no sitting on swivel chairs etc and at six weeks I personally wouldn't use a twisting motion. I am now six months post TKR and I'm still careful about twisting motions! When I go swimming I was told never to use the breast stroke "frog" leg action as it would displace my TKR and so I do a funny stroke involving breast stroke arms and free style kick legs!!
