Steroid Medication

3yrs ago I was informed that I had PMR and referered  Rheumatologist who carried out some some Tests, which revealed that I had Fibromyalgia , crystals in my joints,in addition to this I also have COPD.

Whilst I appreciate these are different issues, however my Rheumi would like to start me on a new treatment but would prefer that I come off the steroids, which is really proving very difficult. I am now to 3g per day, however the pain is returning, plus fatique, and me feeling miserable.

I also have joint problems for which I take other medications. My Steroids have to be increased when I have a flare up with my COPD as I have now,so my GP has upped my dose of steriods for 1 week to 30mg per day. In additions to my COPD I have at present Shingles.

So after these episodes I will have to decrease the steroids to try to get down to the 3mg per day....any ideas? suggesions? would be welcome.

    Hello

I have Chronic Urticaria and have been on Prednisone for almost two years. I was down to 1 mg every other day until I had a flare up of hives then my  specialist neeed me to go back up to 20 mg until I became hive free.  She has me stay on that for a week or so then has me go down to 19 mg for several days to a week then 18 mg for several days to a week ....then 17 mg and so on.  The key is to go down very slowly so your body can adapt to the change of less Prednisone.  Other doctors did not take me down slowly and I ended up breaking out in hives.  I am now down to 10 mg next week I will go down to 9mg......then 8 mg..I'm still hive free.

Needless to say I have large prescription of 1mg Prednisone.

i hope this helps....It works for me.....I have a great doctor!

    i wish you well

If the pred is for PMR and you need 3mg to manage the pain of PMR - you will not get down below that without pain however slowly you reduce.

What does he want to start you on? And is it for the PMR or one of the other problems?
