Steroid reduction side effects

Posted , 12 users are following.

Hi all,

I have recently been diagnosed with PMR, and had great support from this forum.

I have reduced from 15-12.5 at the second attempt.

Reduced fro 12.5 - 10 on Sunday, felt cry tired and today very dizzy, felt sick etc.

Is this do you think to steroid reduction.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Not coping very well with this illness.

Thank you

Julia, in my opinion you went too fast.  The name of the PMR game is SLOW!. Sometimes very slow. Unfortunatley, you will have to go back to 15 & start over....

PMR patients may be especially sensitive to the steroid withdrawal pain. That pain is very similar to the regular PMR pain and of course, we all have different reactions stepping down from Prednisone. Try using the following plan to reduce down by 1 mg at a time. As an example, say you are going from 15 mg to 14mg of Prednisone…..Start with 15mg the first day then use 14mg for the next 6 days...etc.

1 day new dose, 6 days old dosage

1 day new dose, 5 days old dosage

1 day new dose, 4 days old dosage

1 day new dose, 3 days old dosage

1 day new dose, 2 days old dosage

1 day new dose, 1 day old dosage

1 day old dose,  2 days new dosage

1 day old dose,  3 days new dosage

1 day old dose,  4 days new dosage

1 day old dose,  5 days new dosage

1 day old dose,  6 days new dosage

Once you get to the every day latest dosage and you feel all right, then start the next reduction step. You can reduce at a degree of about 1mg or less (some cut 1 Mg pills into quarters) per month and even longer on a nonstop basis - usually under the guidance of your Rheumatologist.  Be careful not to see-saw back and forth with attempting to adjust your own pill scheduling. It can make the symptoms so much harder to control. How do you know if your PMR is under control and you can advance to a lower dosage of Prednisone? You know your own body.  If there are underlying familiar PMR aches, pains and stiffness that won't get better with each lowered dose then yes  - it is still there. Hope you find an experienced doctor that KNOWS about PMR!!!!!

Once I got to 10mg it was a different animal as I adapted to the l.....

Prednisone…..Start with 15mg the first day then use 14mg for the next 6 days...etc.  I think you have it the wrong way round!

Start with 14 (new dose) next 6 days 15 (old dose) etc.
