steroids and osteoporosis

Hi Guys, anyone out there had a Dexa scan lately? I've been told that anyone taking steroids regularly for a long time should be getting checked for loss of bone density. I've just been for one and have been told that I now have osteoporosis with a high risk of fracture if I fall. sad

I must admit that it isn't only taking steroids for PMR in my case.. I have Pernicious Anemia and an Underactive Thyroid too. But being only 53 I didn't ever dream that I would be told that I had Osteoporosis!! I always thought that it was an older persons disease!!

Sorry if I seem a bit down at the moment...I always try to look on the bright side...I know there are many people are worse off than me.. but its hard when you keep getting hit with double whammies!!

Hi everyone, I have had PMR for 2and half years. I have been off steroids once for a month but the dreaded pmr came back and I had to go back on steroids. 2 weeks ago my consultant sent me for a dexa scan which wouldn,t you know showed I have osteoporosis. I was prescribed AA at the beginning which I took every week . I made me feel ill every week, dizzy light headed, so eventually i STOPPED TAKING IT because I was on 3 mg of pred. the endochronologist I saw said I was on such a low dose of pred I wouldn't have any side effects. However I have since had a flare of pmr and had to up the dose so the rheumitologist read me the riot act and insisted I went back on AA. This I duly did and then experienced terrible hip, thigh and groin pains. so I stopped taking it again I am now in a quandry because having read all the side effects of AA it is possible in some rare cases to get spontaneous fractures of the thighs and if you already have thigh pain to consult the doctor at once Wendy frown
