Stertraline and Alcohol.

Hi
I’ve been taking Steraline 100mg for about 5 years now and overall, I’ve found it successful. I started taking it for anxiety and OCD and it’s really helped me get back to normal in life! The problem I have is this; I have recently stopped drinking alcohol after realising that I drink too much and I was bordering on dependency. Since I’ve stopped drinking, I’ve become terribly depressed. Has anyone else experienced this?

I have no personal experience of this, but having lost 2 friends to alcoholism I can say that it is simply another addiction, so perhaps, like drugs, you are having withdrawal symptoms. I would suggest you see your doctor for guidance.
Good luck.

I am only on Day 3 of sertraline so can’t comment on the effects, but I also drink far too much and am trying to stop. Both my GP and my psychotherapist told me not to stop completely and just try cutting it down gradually as stopping would have a negative effect on the way I am already feeling.
Luckily, starting the sertraline is helping as I don’t feel like drinking at all and used to drink a bottle of wine (or more sometimes) a night! So I’m just drinking a small glass or maximum of 2 (less than half a bottle anyway) and not feeling any ill effects so far.
Just take it easy and try and cut down gradually rather than stop completely.
Good luck.

Hi peter,
I have the problem that when Idrink I can’t just have one but carry on and on.
It’s very hard when you stop alcohol it probley can cause depression and other symptoms , it’s sounds to me 𝒴𝑜𝓊𝓇 doing really well.
Give your self praise and I pray your depression subsides, you will get through you sound to me to be a very strong minded person.
I know what your going through, take a day at a time it will get better.??

Fair play to you peter...don't worry its just a side effect of stopping
this will pass in a few days...alcohol and anti depressants are a bad combination...alcohol being a depressant and meds anti...so you're fighting a losing battle...you should be very proud of yourself...keep up the good work
I've reduced my drinking as well...liked a good few drinks every other Friday
Vodka used to send my ocd through the roof...now I only have a few beers..with the intention of stopping altogether...I am on 200mg sertraline...started on 50mg in Nov 2016...reaching 200mg a month ago...
Its been pure hell its only now that I see a light at the end of the tunnel
The mistake I made was not upping my doses sooner
