Stiff knee

After 9 weeks my knee & I are just getting on gone and then for some reason it became extremely stiff. It has been really stiff for several days even though I exercise & walk a little, I am so disappointed. I'm going to the physio tomorrow & sure he'll think my bend is worse than 3 weeks ago. Help ......

Hi Eileen. I'm 7 wks and completely ditto this. Yesterday I felt I had to force my bend past the discomfort into pain territory, due to stiffness over the last few days! So by this reply I can hopefully follow your discussion and see if it is the norm and take onboard any tips.

Eileen I'm 9 weeks also. I'm sure as heck better than I was 9 weeks ago but still stiff every day, some days better than others??!! I'm starting to think it's going to be part of my life for awhile. My PT said I'm still swollen inside the knee and, of course, get more swollen outside after PT and exercise. I didn't realize I could still be swollen inside all this time!!?? I see my ortho tomorrow and ask about this. I'll let you know what I'm told. Luck and prayers to you. 🙏??

Yes Eizie, we really don't know what's going on with knee. We've come on since 9 weeks ago for sure. I even think nights aren't quite so bad now either. It's just that stiffness , but as you say Eizie, if inside the knee is even slightly swollen or not mended it will cause us trouble bending. Be good to see p t tomorrow, I only see him every 2-3 weeks, I'd love to know what your Ortho says . Good luck keep well

So, Eileen I went to ortho today for 9 week check up for my bilateral knee replacement. He's happy so I'm happy. I'm about 110 in left knee and 105 in right. I asked him about this bending stuff and he asked me am I mobile, can I go up and down stairs, drive, etc which I can. He said he'd like me to get to 110 in right but he expects that to come. Gave me a few weeks more for OT because he doesn't want me to go backwards. And I have to see him again in a month. I also asked about the ever present stiffness and he verified what my PT said. We are still swollen inside our knee and that accounts for stiffness; can last for a year or do but hopefully gets less over time.
Back to the bending. He explained to me that if I was younger, say in my 40's, he would want me more than 110 and I probably want to be too. But at age 65 he is not as worried especially since I'm not some super athletic person which I am not!! I asked if he thought I needed that manipulation under anesthesia which I was so afraid of and he said no, that I'm doing fine, just can't regress!! Phew!! Thank God!
Hope this info is helpful. Prayers and luck! 🙏??

Well done Eizie you are doing really well. My word I didn't get 110 in ONE leg at 9 weeks & you got good bend in the other too!
You are beating the BTKR!!
Take care

Hi Eizie. That's great news from your ortho & I think your bends are really good. Interesting to know the cause of the stiffness but guess it makes sense when we think of the brutal surgery we had, I can't imagine how you're coping with 2. I drove myself to physio yesterday & as I'd over done it a few days before ( gardening) I was quite pleased my bend was 105 but it had been 110 :-( he tried to bend it more but I hit the roof, he said sorry ,so I'm back to resting & exercising as we all are. Having said that I must say that I had a better night, not brilliant but best I've had since 21 January !!! Like you I'm no sports woman, never have been ,but at 78 I'm active a gardener i do charity work for Child Contact , love walking, shopping , going out for coffee & meals & so lucky to have loads of friends & family. I usually have a Greek island holiday but won't this year, though my daughter's wanted me to go. I know my limitations!! My husband is older, had a stroke , & lost it a bit but is well looked after by us all. Take care Eizie, love to know how you get on. I am definitely going to try & get a better bend for next OT visit next month. Also I'm not so good at coming downstairs normally, got to practice. Good luck take care .

Hi Eileen
9 weeks is still very early days yet. Just keep on doing what you should be. Remember to rest often. This operation takes it all out of you & you are just about getting back to where you were.
Good luck & don't expect to have a timeframe when you will be better, it will be better when it's better.
All the best

Ah thanks Marilyn, yes I guess I'm worried I'm not doing better .
I drove myself to physio today I knew my bend wouldn't be as good as I over done it a couple of days ago & knee is more stiff at the mo . My bend was only 105. I just have to keep exercising resting & with cooking meals , for husband, washing up & laundry & trying to keep house a by clean clean There's not always time or energy to do all of the exercises. I need to keep focused , nights are still bad

I think we all think we aren't doing as well as we should. Even those who get really good bend straight away feel they're not doing enough!
I think we should, all of us, give ourselves a break. We've done really well! We've been sliced & diced, we've iced, rested, elevated & exercised, exercised, exercised! We are all heroines/heroes, especially the bilaterals among us,( you are truly Trojans!).
Good luck to everyone.
We ALL rock!
