Stiffness in thighs

Posted , 12 users are following.

Hello fellow hippies I am 10 weeks post op. have been doing exercises daily and walk every other day. I live at bottom of hill so one way is always uphill and it is quitehard going. I was not fit in the first place as suffered sciatica as well as hip pain for many years. I find when walking that any pain eases but once I sit down for a bit when I get up I am really stiff win both thighs. Once get going it eases. Is there anything I can do to ease this stiffness or is it going to take time due to so many 'new' muscles being used? My new hip is great it's just the stiffness and backache. Any ideas would be welcome

I had my hip surgery 10 months ago and am still a little sore after getting up when sitting awhile. But I went to an acupuncturist at about 8 wks post op and it helped me.

    Hi Linda

Greetings....sounds like all is going well...The hill sounds like a good challenge !

At 7.5 weeks l too feel stiffness/soreness after sitting...my Alexandra techniques teacher and hospital physio both say this is normal and not to worry. Seems to take 10 steps to ease for me!

    Hi Linda

I'm nearly 14 weeks post op and I am,like some other replies, still stiff after sitting a while. I live in the Peak District so everywhere is up or down a hill. I think it's good practice for our thigh muscles but it does take its toll!

I must say that reading this forum has really kept my spirits up. We are told by medics that probably after 6 weeks everything will be wonderful but for a lot of us that isn't the case. Its so easy to feel that you've done something wrong or you're not doing your exercises right, but we all start from a different base point so it makes sense that we're not all going to recover at the same rate.

I have just, last week, started seeing the physio at my GPs surgery. he really seemed to listen to how I feel and where my pain is and I feel he's working WITH me rather than me having to fit into his expectations.

thank you all for your replies. Feel better knowing I am not alone with this. Six weeks is turning point for some things but doesnt magically eliminate all pain!   Martha, sounds good what physio doing. Keep us posted on progress. X

Hi Martha, 15 weeks here for me and I agree.  I belong to another group also and there was a girl on there just today who wrote she was DAY 24 billateral hip replacements posterior and she went back to work.....I just shook my head.....couldn't even think about going back to work at day 24 with just one posterior hip replacement.  I too also still get thigh stiffness  even at my stage......  Wishing you good luck! I'm 10wks post op and as many others on here have aching bum muscles mostly after sitting down and especially after driving for more than 30mins.

However the pain soon eases when walking,so on the plus side I'm getting plenty of exercise..As Martha said it can take a good 3-6 months for most people to feel anything like 'normal' again..you have to be very careful not to get to ambitious as you start to feel better.

I have the same problem Linda and wish the stiffness and soreness would stop All I can do is ice it and take some ibuprofen. You would think with all the daily exercises we do twice a day and the daily walks over the past weeks we would be all loosened up by now. I will keep hoping it will ease up, I just wish it would happen soon.

The stiffnes and soreness is a common complaint.  6 weeks is touted as the turning point but it seems that it takes much longer.  I was unable to walk any distance before surgery and today I walked the 3 long blocks downtown and back.  A major milestone for me.  I did experience soreness and stiffness but nothing like pre surgery.  Take you time and go at your own pace.  I am now 5 weeks post op and have 6 week follow up appt next week.

Thanks everyone. Like some have said at least the stiffness is nothing like pre op pain. Will just keep plodding along and hopefully get there in the end. Love this forum xx

I still get a bit stiff if I sit for too long, some of that is due to age I think!  However it does wear off and my thighs no longer feel stiff when I sit for short periods, say an hour or so.  I live about three-quarters up a hill, so have a shorter walk to get to the top, easier going down to the bottom but I can't manage to walk all the way up as yet and I am a bit dubious of trying in case I get stuck halfway.  It is a very long hill.  On level ground I can walk for ages without any problems.

Yes I think you are right Barbara, age definitely plays a part!  I am 64 and was not fit anyway so suppose not doing too bad x
