Still having blips

I'm coming here as this group seems more active, I am on escitalopram not citalopram but the process seems to be the same for all ssris. I am on 10mg of escitalopram for anxiety, I have taken it in the past and 10mg worked for me (it is equal to 20mg citalopram). I am still having blips that last a week after 3 months and I am just looking for some hope as when I am in the middle of a blip I feel like I will never get better. I just had 12 days feeling 90% better which is the longest stretch of good days I have had since starting the meds. I read all of katecogs posts and it seems this is normal? I am now on Day 3 of another blip and cant stop crying with anxiety again.

Hi the answer is in your post. You just experienced 12 days of 90% improvement. You would have given anything for that at the start, and this is how recovery occurs. You know that yourself as you've read all the posts. It's just really frustrating and frightening when you get setbacks, but see it like this. It seems from my experience that right before an improvement happens we have to have a setback, why I don't know, but that seems to be the recovery process. The same thing happens with physical injuries. A broken limb is more painful and sore just before healing a bit more. Look at it in this way and you will see the setback as a positive thing, not to be scared of. Look forward to more improvement once the setback is over. Take care.

Thank you ever so much Ian. Have you fully recovered now? I know everyone's journey is different timescale wise, I was just hoping by this point at 3 months that my blips would be milder and shorter. It really does feel like such a slow and gradual process.

That's because it is a slow and gradual process. There's no tablet ever been discovered that can change you from an anxious, depressed, worrying, stressed person overnight into a confident, happy, carefree, worry free individual. The whole world would be taking it! Do not put any time limit on your recovery, that only adds to the frustration and stress. Accept that it will take as long as it takes, and don't compare yourself yo anyone else's recovery. If you have had 12 good days at 90%,then that is a very good recovery rate after 3 months. The medication will make you feel a lot better, but anxiety requires more than medication because it is borne out of a faulty, negative way of thinking. You have to work on this as well as the medication otherwise you will relapse every time you stop the medication. Taking the medication is like wearing a lifejacket out at sea because you can't swim. As soon as you take the lifejacket away again you will drown. We have to learn to swim. That means working on our worrying, negative, stressful anxious thoughts and learning coping strategies. Good luck.
