Still having left ear problem for 2 months

Hi all I was wondering if you could help.

It's now been two months I've had a moderately blocked ear and drainage problems. I was referred to ent because I was so anxious thinking I had cancer, however my gp remains unconcerned. I continue to have different symptoms, sometimes crackling, popping when I put my jaw forward, tinnitus. Sometimes mucus down the back of my throat.

My ent appointment is on the 21st march. I had time off work and have had cbt because of this.

People ask me if it's getting better, in all honesty I don't know, I can't remember my life before this! (Gp diagnosed me with etd and sinusitis, I had a cold in December which excacerbated the ear which I fear I damaged through wearing headphones and using a cotton bud too far)

The blood in the mucus has stopped, I've had two courses of oral antibiotics, and have stopped taking the decongestants as you're not supposed to take them long term.

I was managing my anxiety fine but the last couple of days it's creeping up on me. I live in the U.K, so would only be seen urgently if they suspected something sinister.

I'm at my wits end and don't know what to do, everything I try has only short term results

My questions are...in the uk how long did you have to wait to see a specialist?

And how do you cope with the anxiety that I read a lot of you have?

Many thanks

It seems anxiety goes hand in hand with ear problems. I waited 4 months to see a consultant

And was told that there was nothing wrong with me. I had all the above problems in both ears. After 3 years I had grommets inserted. Can't say they have helped a lot. Had a very heavy cold beginning of January and my ears are even more blocked and getting tinnitus off and on. Summer should sort it out a bit. Just one thing it is very frustrating to keep being told by doctors that they can't see anything wrong so we get dismissed.

Thank you Patricia. It's very frustrating, I'm not in pain but it's so unnerving, my mother has recently gone through cancer treatment, which has heightened my anxiety, my other fear is that this will permanently damage my hearing. I've made another gp appointment to consider starting the steroid nasal drops/spray, although it seems people don't seem to think it works.

After you were initially told nothing was wrong, what happened after that?

      Thanks for the reply

    Hello Catherine,

?Not too sure whether you are seeing the posts I've been writing to other people with this problem.  Try not to worry as there are so many of us experiencing the same,  Eustachian Tube Dysfunction.  Mine started in 1984, on and off, but more on than off.  I too suffer severe sinusitis and allergies problems.  I see my ENT consultant twice yearly, due to the fact I contracted bacterial meningitis with the problem of blocked ears.  The mucus sat in the eustachian tubes too long and it turned bacterial, crossing the blood brain barrier, which I might add is very rare, so don't go worrying about that, just be aware if you get ear infections due to this problem, then get yourself onto antibiotics.  You wil know if it's an infection because your ear will ache.  You shoud then be prescribed antibiotics. Unfortunately in 1994, suffering the meningitis, a young junior doctor took me off the antibiotics and that's when everything turned nasty.  The meningitis took hold and I lost the sight in my left eye and hearing in right ear. Due to the build up of presssure sometimes my eardrum bulges, resulting in a perforation.  I then pay and see my consultant privately ( to get an appointment quickly) and he then uses microsuction and sucks all the mucky fluid out, leaving me feeling wonderful, until it all builds up again.  I've been very congested since the beginning of December and it continues.  This is probably due to the mold and damp of our Winter months.  House dust (which is impossible to get rid of) is one of my allergies.  One of the people on this web-site doesn't recommend some of the medication that I've had to be on, however,  Something like blocked ears can drag on for months and months if it isn't sorted.  This at the height of my suffering is what I've been prescribed.  Your GP will obviously know the exact amount of time you should be on Prednisolone steriod tablets, but these are what I take when my ears are really clogged to get rid of inflammation in the tubes and dry up all the fluid.  If on these tablets for longer than a week the reducing method of them is used.  Once I've taken maybe a months course I'm then able to breath again, my sense of smell and tastes returns too.  After finishing them to keep everything at bay, I then use Aqueous Flixonase Nasal Spray and this should help a lot, like it did for me.  Before Christmas I had almost five months free of this problem and it felt so good.....something that groanes on for months and months can drag us down. I've been blowing down (sounds crude) quite a lot of mucus that has streaks of blood in, however I don't worry about that as I think it's normal. I've suffered this problem now for over thirty years and becoming used to it now.  But when it gets too bad that's when I take action and use either Prednisolone tablets, or the slighty stronger Flixonase Nasules and that sorts ears out for a while, which gives me a break from it.  These particular nasal drops also mustn't be taken for too long (recommended for max of six weeks) but they do the trick for me.   If you don't get to grips with it now, in my experience it will drag on for quite a long time.

?I really hope you get sorted soon and I'd like to hear back from you how you get on.

    Kind Regards

    ?Anne

Oh Anne, 30 years on and off, that sounds awful but I guess its a lot about learning to live with it. I've always been "nasally" and had a couple of ear infections in the past but nothing like this. Aswell as my mother's cancer I've had a couple of close family deaths. I also work virtually full time and have two children. I was hoping time off from work would help but it didn't. I'm seeing the gp with a view to getting either the steroid spray or prednisolone (I doubt she will prescribe me the latter). I'm struggling anxiety wise can't really look forward to anything, even though I have lots to be thankful for.

Anne I will let you know how I get on, today my ear was clogged this morning, it seems to have shifted into my jaw today. What a palava as my mum would say!

I wish you well and will keep in touch, I appreciate your advice.

When my ear problems started on New Year's Day I was so anxious I couldn't sleep.  I would go to 24 hour stops and walk around all night and never sleep.  My family doctor gave me Klonopin to take as needed.  I just take a half dose and only need it about every other day.  If one ear is clogged up I am usually ok but if it happens to both and it feels like my entire face is being sucked in when I swallow I need the Klonopin.

At night I take two benadryl before I go to bed and then watch/listen to sleep relaxation videos on you tube and do deep breathing and muscle tensing/relaxing until I fall asleep.

I didn't have the clogged up feeling today but both ears were wet all day long!

Hello Sally, It sounds s thoughyou have a small perforation and the fluid is seeping into your ears.  Because the perforation is tiny sometimes not all of the fluid drains, still leaving you with a blocked feeling.

Have you read my message to Catherine, you may find my message will help you too.

Which country do you live in ?

      Hope you feel better soon.

      Hi Sally

I completely understand your anxiety. I've been having online counselling, my next task is to approach this from a point of view that it's not life threatening (it's taken me a long time to get to this point) and distraction. I had the best nights sleep for a long time, and have felt better today. I haven't done anything to my ear, no jaw movements, and on the whole I've had periods during the day where I've forgotten about it (not for long but it's small steps). It was even suggested that anxiety may make the symptoms worse (in my case). It's so hard to train your brain to do something when it's predisposed to do something else.

How was today for you? I really wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. I was managing it ok today but the last couple of hours I have a build up of mucus I can feel at the back of the throat

      Hi Anne

I think through all this I may have perforated at some point, I had a wet ear at some point a few days after I did too much fiddling and blowing air out my ears.

My counsellor suggested maybe my anxiety is fuelling the problem. I don't know, it's like the chicken and the egg!

Thank you for your help, I hope you have been well today

Hi Sally I replied but it's being moderated, maybe because I mentioned some essential oils and a diffuser I've been using?

I've been having online counselling as well, today I've been trying to distract myself and have found it has worked a bit.

I hope today was a good day for you

I have a diffuser and tried an oil for sinuses.  I didn't notice it helping any but I liked the smell!
